Used when you can not find a suitable landmark that lines up with your heading It’s all in the hands Helps provide a mean to approximate angular difference

4 Ranges Most useful and accurate line of position
Valuable for compass checks and determining deviation

5 Ranges Relative positions of landmarks
Used when you can not find two landmarks that form a range

6 Bearings Direct bearings Relative bearings
Measured from true or magnetic north Two or more bearings that cross produce a fix Relative bearings Taken in reference to the bow of the boat

8 Collision Bearings Use relative bearings to anticipate the potential for a collision If the relative bearing of another boat does not change, you will collide. Know the rules of the road and take appropriate action.
