2 Why agriculture livelihoods in displacement contexts?
Conflict and hunger driving displacement, exacerbated by climate shocks. In countries accounting for majority of displaced people: Up to 8 of 10 people rely on crop production, fishing, livestock and forests for their survival

3 Investing in resilient livelihoods – Providing pathways to a more stable, prosperous future for displaced and host communities

4 Dimitra Clubs “Today, the Dimitra Club belongs to us. It’s ours and it benefits the entire community!”.

5 Skills training and linking to job markets – Syrian refugees
Providing training in agro-food processing for refugees and host communities in Turkey, Jordan Linking trainees to labour markets through job fairs and on-the-job training According to UNHCR, this is the most successful project of its type in terms of people finding work after the intervention – 1/5 participants employed so far Cash-based assistance to vulnerable families to enable them to access food immediately

6 Supporting returnees, refugees, host communities – Burundi
Caisses de resilience approach Linking input distribution to training, producers’ associations and village savings and loans associations Including returnees, displaced and host community members Contributing to improved social cohesion and enhancing the resilience of agriculture-based livelihoods

7 Building resilience in contexts of displacement – SAFE approach
Combination of interventions needed to address environmental impacts of large-scale population movements Reducing demand Introducing fuel-efficient cookstoves Promoting woodfuel alternatives (e.g. LPG) Improving supply Plantations of fast-growing tree species for sustainable woodfuel supply Forest rehabilitation and management with national and local authorities

8 E.g. Bangladesh Impact of large inflows of refugees:
Heightened social tensions: labour competition; overwhelmed services; land disputes; inflation; safety, security & protection issues Natural resource base strained: More than 800 tonnes of firewood consumption per day, equivalent to a forest loss of about 6.7 ha per day; +8,000ha severely damaged Environmental risks: landslides, flash floods, water contamination, monsoon season
