Curriculum Map Key Stage 3: Year 7 Computer Science & IT

2 Statement of intent Key Stage 3 Year 7 Subject: Computer Science Academic Year: Computer Science is the study of principles and practices that underpin an understanding and modelling of computation, and of their application in the development of computer systems. At its heart lies the notion of computational thinking: a mode of thought that goes well beyond software and hardware, and that provides a framework within which to reason about systems and problems. This mode of thinking is supported and complemented by a substantial body of theoretical and practical knowledge, and by a set of powerful techniques for analysing, modelling and solving problems. Computer Science is deeply concerned with how computers and computer systems work, and how they are designed and programmed. Students studying computing gain insight into computational systems of all kinds, whether or not they include computers. It allows us to solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence. It is a skill that empowers, and that all Students should be aware of and have some competence in. Furthermore, students who can think computationally are better able to conceptualise and understand computer-based technology, and so are better equipped to function in modern society. The Computer Science curriculum at Key Stage 3 has been designed to prepare students for Key Stage 4 and beyond, whether this is in the Computer Science and IT field or not. This is done by not only developing their understanding of Computer Science and IT but also increasing their competency in literacy and numeracy.

3 Subject: Computer Science Academic Year 2019-20
Curriculum Overview Key Stage: 3 Subject: Computer Science Academic Year Year Unit content Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring1 Summer 1 Summer 2 Year 7 Unit 0 - The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Unit 1 - E-Safety Unit 2 – Python programming Unit 3 – Photoshop – photo editing Unit 4 – Database development Unit 5 – MIT Scratch – visual programming Unit 6 – Digital Music Assessment Students will use Shotcut to create an advert for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Students will build on the skills they learnt in Unit 0 and create a movie about the importance of being e-safe Students will complete programming tasks on: Sequence Selection – IF statements Iteration - FOR & WHILE loops Turtle graphics Students will need to create three “Photoshopped” images based on scenarios which will be peer and self assessed Student will be required to create a relational databases, queries, reports and forms in Microsoft Access based on a given scenario Student will design and develop a game in the visual programming language MIT Scratch Students will use Mixcraft and other digital technologies to create music to three different adverts

4 Subject: Computer Science & IT Academic Year 2019-20
Curriculum Overview Key Stage 3 Year 8 Subject: Computer Science & IT Academic Year Year Unit content Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring1 Summer 1 Summer 2 Year 8 Unit 1 - Computer Hardware Unit 2 – Representation of Data Unit 3 – Binary & Denary numbers Unit 4 – Microsoft Kodu Unit 5 - Networks Unit 6 – Logic gates Assessment Students to complete tests on input, output and specialist devices Students will create a poster about the different storage units, how to convert between them and their uses Students will complete worksheets and tests on converting between denary and binary numbers and add binary numbers Student will design and develop a game in the visual programming language Microsoft Kodu Complete worksheets on computer networking and design their own network using a diagramming and vector graphics application Students will be required to create logic diagrams from boolean algebra and also create truth tables. They will also have a number of tests on the topics.
