2 Labeling Lines With Point Marker Symbols
Some assembly required, batteries not included.

3 Labeling Lines with Point Marker Symbols
Style type: Labels

4 2. Label Highway Features
Labeling Lines with Point Marker Symbols Some assembly required, batteries not included. 1. Use a Geodatabase 2. Label Highway Features 3. Convert Labels to Annotation 4. Convert Annotation to Points 5. Match to Symbols in a Style

5 1. Use a Geodatabase If the highway features are not in a Geodatabase:
A. Create a new Personal Geodatabase use ArcCatalog: - Right Click Desired Folder - Click New - Select Personal Geodatabase - Type in Database Name B. Copy the shapefile/coverage to the Geodatabase use ArcToolbox: Feature Class to Feature Class Tool

6 1. Use a Geodatabase B. Copy the shapefile/coverage (cont’d)
New Feature Class

7 2. Label Highway Features
TOC: Right Click Line Labels Tab Layer, Select Properties: Field with label text Select a small size

8 2. Label Highway Features
Results: If labels were larger, some would not show

9 3. Convert Labels to Annotation
TOC: Right Click Line Layer Select Convert Labels to Annotation

10 3. Convert Labels to Annotation
Use the database with the line features. Must be Feature Linked Convert

11 3. Convert Labels to Annotation
Results:

12 3. Convert Labels to Annotation
Edit Annotation: - Delete Extras - Move Others

13 3. Convert Labels to Annotation
Results:

14 4. Convert Annotation to Points
Use ArcToolbox’s Feature To Point Tool

15 4. Convert Annotation to Points
Edit Further: (if necessary) Annotation left on to identify extra points.

16 4. Convert Annotation to Points
After point cleanup: Annotation left on to identify extra points.

17 4. Convert Annotation to Points
TextString Field Point Feature Attribute Table:

18 5. Match to Symbols in a Style
Point Layer Symbology Tab Properties Menu: Field name in point layer to match. Style name. The Style’s Name field will be used for the match.

19 5. Match to Symbols in a Style
Annotation left on to identify extra points.

21 Labeling Lines with Point Marker Symbols
Summary: 1. Convert to Geodatabase, if necessary - use Feature Class to Feature Class Tool 2. Label Highway Features - use small size text 3. Convert Labels to Annotation - must be feature linked - edit annotation 4. Convert Annotation to Points - use Feature to Point Tool - edit points (if necessary) 5. Symbolize Using Match to Symbols in a Style

22 Symbol Naming Options Using symbol name prefix/suffixes, in many cases route names of highway features can be matched without changing the feature layer.

23 Symbol Naming Options Label one direction only

24 Symbol Naming Options False Suffix
First work with only those Interstates with “N”s:

26 Symbol Naming Options Inconsistent Data

27 Symbol Name Prefix and Suffixes:

28 Converting “Old” DDV Sets
Existing older highway sets do not have useful symbol names: Enter Symbol Names in Style (using Microsoft Access) Then the Style can be easily used in Matching symbols to a Style.

29 1. Enter Symbol Names in Style

30 1. Enter Symbol Names in Style
Using Style Manager as a guide, enter symbol Names MS Access Style Manager

31 1. Enter Symbol Names in Style
Timing: renamed ~200 symbols in 30 min. MS Access Style Manager
