3 Metternich’s Plan for Europe
Klemens von Metternich was the most important figure at the Congress He had 3 goals for the congress The containment of France To restore a balance of power To restore legitimacy to Europe’s thrones

4 The Containment of France
The goal was to make the weak countries around France stronger This was to halt future French aggression Created the Germany confederation (led by Austria), the Netherlands, & Switzerland

5 Balance of Power Kept France whole without severe punishments so that France wouldn’t want to take revenge & no other European nation would become too strong from France’s demise

6 Legitimacy The congress wanted to restore as many monarchs as possible back to their original positions Believed that this would stabilize political relations in Europe

7 The Success of the Congress
Involved the cooperation of nations of an entire continent Created a new balance of power in Europe Created a time of peace

8 Alliances Holy Alliance-Austria & Prussia agreed to handle their relations with the rest of Europe with Christian principles Concert of Europe-alliance set up by Metternich that stated that each nations would help their neighbors if revolutions broke out

9 Long Term Legacy The power of France decreased while the power of England & Prussia increased A feeling of Nationalism (an intense pride in one’s country) began to spread throughout European countries
