What advice would you give to a student to help look for a work placement? What advice would you give to a student to help them prepare for their placement? What type of jobs would you expect a student to do when on work experience at your company? How do you expect a student to use their initiative? What would you expect a student to do if they are ill and unable to attend their placement? For you, as a business, what are the repercussions if a student doesn’t turn up and hasn’t notified you? In your view, as an employer, how valuable is work experience for a student? How can a good work experience benefit students in the future?

All work experience is valuable, no matter in what field it is. Evidence of: Positive attitude to work, being polite Flexibility and enthusiasm Initiative – ability to think for yourself in the workplace Reliability – turning up on time Communication skills – confident to talk to people, willing to ask for help and a good listener Team worker – gets on well with others Literacy, Numeracy & computer skills

9 When is work experience in Year 10?
Work experience will take place one afternoon per week (exact day to be announced after May half term) It will start after October half term through until the Summer holidays.

10 Work experience – next steps
You must return the parental consent form to your form tutor by Friday 24 May 2019. You can researching potential work placements: Speak to your family – do they have any contacts? Ask your teachers – do they have any contacts? Visit some potential employers and ask if they accept students for work placements. After May half-term: Work Experience Launch assembly 3. You will be given more information about securing a placement and some support.

13 When is work experience?
Work experience will take place every Monday afternoon from 1.10pm onwards. It will start after October half term through until the end of June.

15 To get the most benefit For maximum benefit try to find a work placement based on: A possible career route An area of interest Support a subject or qualification

16 Work experience – the process
Parental consent form should have already been returned to school last half term. We will be chasing up remaining forms. You should then look for a work placement and fill in the work experience placement form (these will be given out today and are available on the school website). You can hand these in before or during the summer holidays. It is important that they are handed in as soon as possible so Health & Safety checks can be completed before you can start your placement. Risk Assessment form should also be completed by the employer. All returned to Pupil Reception (or Main Reception during holidays)

17 How to Look for a Work Experience
Write to local employers – this could be an or company website Call in direct and ask to speak to the manager Telephone and ask to speak to the manager Speak to your family – do they have contacts at their own place of work? Ask your teachers – do they have any contacts? START APPLYING NOW

18 Where could you do your work experience?
In the past, students have completed their work experience in the following places: Retail stores Doctors surgeries Veterinary surgeries Hairdressing salons Gyms/Leisure centres Garages/Repair workshops Schools/Nurseries Hotels/Tourist places Restaurants & Cafes Solicitors/Legal firms General offices Council offices Banks & Building Societies
