To compare and group materials together according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases by exploring the discovery of oxygen. To identify changes relating to simple scientific ideas and processes by exploring the discovery of oxygen and the theory of phlogiston. To take accurate measurements using standard units and a range of equipment, including thermometers by comparing the Kelvin scale with Celsius.

Name and locate the main rivers and seas of the UK Identify rivers and seas of the UK 6 Explain the importance of the Prime Meridian to London’s history 4. Name and locate areas of high ground in the UK Use a map or atlas to locate areas of high ground in the UK 5. Identify ways London has changed over time Discovery Homework: Children research the sign, symbol or flag for their own county. Why has it been chosen? What does each part represent? They then go on to think about what is important to them about where they live, and design a new flag or sign incorporating their ideas. National Curriculum References To name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time, ( in the context of maps of the UK.) To use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world,( in the context of describing the position of UK cities. ) To use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied,( in the context of the UK’s rivers and seas.) To identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/ Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night), (in the context of London’s history.) 3. 6. Make a sculpture of a landmark (e.g. Eiffel tower, Big Ben, Leaning Tower of Pisa) What is printing? How do artists print? What effect does this create? Deconstructing flags as art including printing Saatchi What is deconstruction? Deconstruct a union jack/flag using pastels 2. Explore the skill of printing How can this be embellished with other mixed media? Union Flag, research other European flags to deconstruct 5. Design sculpture of a UK or European landmark 4. Explore sculpture Identify different sculptures What materials are used for sculpting? 3.
