Of the approximately 3,100 teachers who are new to teaching physics each year, only about 1,100, or 35%, have a degree in physics or physics education.

The numbers of high school students taking physics has been growing rapidly: over the past two decades, that number has more than doubled to 1.38 million students. Overall, 39% of high school graduates have taken a physics class.
