1 Defining Characterization
Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. What are the two main types of char’z’n? direct characterization indirect characterization.

2 Direct Characterization
Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”

3 Indirect Characterization
Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization: Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Effect on others What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

5 Characterization Activity Due Monday 20 May!
Draw a large illustration of a character in Haroun on 11x17” paper. You can choose the character! BUT! Each person in your table group needs to do someone different. Put your name/class/number on the BACK of the paper.

6 Characterization Activity
Around the illustration, identify 5 examples of characterization for your character. 5 pieces of direct quoted evidence with MLA in-text citation At least 3 different S T E A L categories Label the category clearly With each quote,1-2 Sentences of analysis of the quote – What does this quote tell us about their character?
