CLIMATE CHANGE Ekaterina Bezpalaya 9V Form “Petru Movila” Lyceum Chisinau, Moldova

2 What is Bad about Climate Change?
The main cause of climate change is global warming, which has many negative consequences on physical, biological and human systems, as well as other effects. The global temperature increase brings disastrous consequences, endangering the survival of the Earth’s flora and fauna, including human beings. The worst climate change impacts include the melting of the ice mass at the poles, which in turn causes rising sea level, producing flooding and threatening coastal environments through which small island states risk disappering entirely.

3 What is Bad about Climate Change?
Climate change also increases the appearance of more violent weather phenomena, drought, fires, the death of animal and plant species, flooding from rivers and lakes, the creation of climate refugees and destruction of the food chain and economic resources, especially in developing countries. Increased water temperatures and higher than normal carbon dioxide concentrations make oceans more acidic.

4 What is Bad about Climate Change in Moldova?
Moldova is located in a temperate continental climate zone remaining one of the poorest countries in Europe. By the end of this century the temperature increase may amount, on average, to 4.1–5.4 °C. On the whole, Moldova will face warmer and wetter winters but hotter and drier summers and autumns. Due to climate change, Moldova is expected to experience increasing frequency of short-term water oversupply, particularly in the form of flash floods as well as seasonal droughts. Climate change could seriously undermine Moldova’s food security.

5 How and Since when did This Phenomenon Start ?
Scientists generally regard the later part of the 19th century as the point at which human activity started influencing the climate. But the new study brings that date forward to the 1830s. When human society began to industrialise, we started to change the chemistry of the atmosphere by adding CO2 to the air. In 1988 a variety of factors —including severe drought and heat and vast fires in parts of the world— had pushed the greenhouse effect into the spotlight.

6 What are the Solutions to Stop Climate Change?
The first way to prevent climate change is to move away from fossil fuels. What are the alternatives? Renewable energies like solar, wind, biomass and geothermal. Reducing our consumption of energy and water by using more efficient devices (e.g. LED light bulbs, innovative shower system) is less costly and equally important. Promoting public transportation, carpooling, but also electric and hydrogen mobility, can definitely help reduce CO2 emissions and thus fight global warming.

7 What are the Solutions to Stop Climate Change?
In order to reduce the CO2 emissions from buildings - caused by heating, air conditioning, hot water or lighting - it is necessary both to build new low energy buildings, and to renovate the existing constructions. Encouraging better use of natural resources, stopping massive deforestation as well as making agriculture greener and more efficient should also be a priority. Adopting responsible consumption habits is crucial, be it regarding food (particularly meat), clothing, cosmetics or cleaning products. Recycling is an absolute necessity for dealing with waste.

8 What are the Solutions to Stop Climate Change in Moldova?
Being an economy in transition and a less developed country, Moldova should make the necessary efforts in order to adapt to climate variability and climate change impacts: change the types of agricultural crops; increase the level of water recycling for industrial needs; create forest bands for agricultural land, roads and water protection; promote the gradual transition from the use of traditional fuel sources to biofuel;

9 What are the Solutions to Stop Climate Change in Moldova?
promote the efficient energy use and promote high energy efficient products; create mechanisms to raise the public awareness raising activities on the phenomenon of climate change and methods to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases; prevent waste generation and to promote its reuse, recycling and recovery in terms of environmental protection.

10 How does Climate Change Affect t Fauna and Flora ?
Climate change affects the complex balance of the planet’s ecosystems:  At the moment we are witnessing this through changes in animal and plant global distribution, as well as their behaviour. They include things such as birds laying eggs earlier each year, plants blossoming earlier, and animals ending hibernation sooner. Up to half of plant and animal species in the world’s most naturally rich areas, such as the Amazon and the Galapagos, could face local extinction by the turn of the century due to climate change.

11 How does Climate Change Affect t Fauna and Flora ?
As the planet warms, species are shifting where, when, and how they thrive. They are moving up slopes and toward the poles. he ones on land are moving an average of more than 10 miles per decade, while marine species are moving four times faster.

12 How does Climate Change Affect t Fauna and Flora in Moldova ?
Rising temperatures will force many living organisms to migrate to cooler areas in the northern part of the country. Some oak species, steppe plants are generally well adjusted to high temperatures. Both floods and droughts will become longer and more severe having a significant impact on meadow species . An increase in air temperature will lead to an increase of the temperature of the surface waters allowing the invasion of dangerous bacteria.
