15 Maintaining Visa Status
Stay enrolled full-time No employment (on or off-campus) until after authorization confirmed by DVS Must report in ACES (now called DukeHub) any address change within 10 days of any move. (Local Residence/Residence Hall and International – non U.S.A.) Rights and Responsibilities of Students in F-1 and J-1 Status Describe ACES address reporting Explain the webpage Rights and Responsibilities: Address Reporting (ACES account) Full-time Enrollment (defined by academic program) Transfer Out of Duke (work with DVS advisor on timing) Employment (do not start until cleared by DVS) Travel (always carry valid visa documents) Need to get the webpage fixed to delete the word “THE” from the title of this document.

16 Employment Opportunities
On-Campus Employment Off-Campus Employment Curricular Practical Training (F-1 Students) Optional Practical Training (F-1 Students) Academic Training (J-1 Students) On campus, 19.9 hours per week during school semester. Explain only that CPT/OPT/AT typically are used during summer and post-graduation. Students will want to review information first and then speak with an advisor about their options. All forms of work authorization require careful planning and timely filing. DVS representatives come to different schools to provide information sessions. 19 Social Security Number and Driver’s License
You must complete registration with DVS before applying for a Social Security Number or a NC Driver’s License. For Social Security Number: F-1 students only eligible if approved for employment. J-1 students eligible without employment. When eligible, students must present to Social Security Administration: Verification letter (visa status/job) issued by DVS Required supporting documents Trips to SSA occur every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Please arrive at International House by 9:45 a.m. For Social Security Number and Driver’s Licenses: WAIT 10 business days after entering the U.S. and registering with DVS before applying. Call Ihouse, when will they know of SS dates in August

20 Personal Integrity Always provide truthful responses to Consular, Immigration, DVS, and University representatives Ensure visa documents have been signed by authorized DVS personnel Understand your responsibilities outlined in your academic program’s Honor Code Note: Honor Code violations can result in forfeiture of your ability to apply for post-degree work authorization and/or cancellation of your F-1 program.

23 Final Checklist To finalize the E-Registration process you are required to bring the following items to Duke Visa Services: Your ORIGINAL visa documents. Your completed Registration Form. Signed Acknowledgement Form. J-1 students only, the completed J Health Insurance Form. If you are a non-Duke sponsored J-1 Student (i.e. Fulbright, IIE, AMIDEAST, etc.) you must schedule an appointment with your DVS advisor directly to complete your registration. The forms can be found on the “Forms and Documents” page of our website: Duke Visa Services Office Directions: Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday, between 8:30am and 4:30pm Address: Smith Warehouse, Bay 7, 1st Floor 114 S. Buchanan Boulevard Durham, NC 27701 The US Department of Homeland Security will not know of your arrival until after you have physically reported to DVS with the above documents.
