19. Social Security Number and Driver’s License You must complete registration with DVS before applying for a Social Security Number or a NC Driver’s License. For Social Security Number:  F-1 students only eligible if approved for employment.  J-1 students eligible without employment. When eligible, students must present to Social Security Administration: 1.Verification letter (visa status/job) issued by DVS 2.Required supporting documents Trips to SSA occur every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Please arrive at International House by 9:45 a.m. For Social Security Number and Driver’s Licenses: WAIT 10 business days after entering the U.S. and registering with DVS before applying. 17

23. Final Checklist Almost Done! You now must take the following to the DVS Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.: 1. Your ORIGINAL visa documents 2. Your completed SEVIS E-Registration FormSEVIS E-Registration Form 3. Signed Acknowledgement FormAcknowledgement Form 4. J-1 students only, the completed J Health Insurance FormJ Health Insurance Form 5. If you are a non-Duke sponsored J-1 Student (i.e. Fullbright, IIE, AMIDEAST, etc.) you must schedule an appointment with your DVS advisor directly to complete your registration.
