The hybrid solution uses a 2-tier storage solution with SSD drives providing cache and HDD providing capacity storage The Hybrid nodes are configured to achieve a 10% cache ratio. The All Flash configuration is a single tier storage. Both solutions have flexible CPU configurations from cores and 2.1 to 3.1 GhZ to allow customers to customize the solution to meet workload requirements. As of May 15, 2019 The latest changes include 256GB RAM option for the All Flash Array, with both scale to 1.5 TB and the addition of the Cisco Switch options. Both solution configurations are flexible and can be configured based on customer standards and requirements for CPU, RAM, Storage and Networking options. HPE is currently the only vendor that offers 3 Network switch options as part of our standard solution. Additionally, HPE offers 42u racks, but can be configured with shorter racks or as a Virtual Rack solution for customer who want the solution installed into their rack onsite. PDU’s are also configurable as metered PDU or standard PDU. All solutions should leverage Power Advisor to ensure solution power requirements are met. based on their requirements or standards. The solution is sold with all deployment and installation services including Rack, Stack, Cabling, Switch Configuraiton, and on-site deployment of Azure Stack software at the customer site. Native Azure Stack Data Protection and High Availability Features
Native Azure backup No Azure Stack Native High Availability Snapshots and replication Does not allow VM-level backups through hypervisor APIs Lacks the enterprise capabilities of on-premises data protection solutions Backs up data directly to Azure public cloud with no option to keep backed up data on- premises; high risk of missing SLAs (RTO) Does not provide HA for Azure Stack Stamp, Tenant VM. Tenant Data, Application, or Workload Not available in Azure Stack Are primarily used for disaster recovery in Azure Public Are not integrated with each application to ensure application- consistent recovery Do not provide a viable long-term retention option Today’s data protection solutions for Azure Stack don’t meet all customer needs. For example, the native Azure backup tool doesn’t provide backups at the VM level. Although there is a capability for backing up the data directly to the Azure public cloud, there is no option of keeping a backup copy on-premises. Snapshots and replication are part of an end-to-end data protection spectrum. However, they don’t integrate with applications to ensure app-consistent recovery and can’t be relied on for long- term retention. ISV Data Protection Suite protects data that is not taken care of with the built-in toolkit. File System NTFS Full+Incr+Diff, Change Log Provider, CSV, file and metadata filtering/options Restore to different locations, Synthetic Full Database SQL VDI+VSS, SQL Always-On (AG), Clustered SQL, parallel streaming, tail log backup Restore to any point in time, Restore to different locations Exchange VSS, DAG, Clustered Exchange, +more granular recovery Other apps and files systems? Migrate VMs and workloads to Azure Stack
IDA VM IDA VSA VM MA VM VM VM VM IDA Commvault leverages an API to provide protection to the tenant VM’s and data along with ability to migrate workloads. VM protection: Virtual Server Agent (VSA) provides agentless protection of Azure Stack virtual machines using Azure Stack API integration – supports individual file or entire VM recovery Blob storage protection: Protects backup and recovery of Blob storage Application protection: Agents available for every major OS, application, and database Backups stored on any target supported by Commvault: disk, tape, Microsoft Azure, or more than 40 other cloud providers VSA MediaAgent VM IDA Migrate Virtual Machines Virtual Repository Virtual Server Agent (VSA) provides agentless migration of VMware and Azure VMs to Azure Stack VMs Workloads can be migrated from any source supported by Commvault® via client agent Commvault automation can ease provisioning of Azure Stack VMs for workload migrations

Disaster Recovery of Azure Stack VMs
Live Sync Additionally, Commvault provides a Live Sync replication capability to propagate changes to the target destination after source backups. Virtual Server Agent (VSA) provides agentless DR of Azure Stack VMs Live Sync replication automatically propagates changes to destination after each backup at the source

We set out on a journey to deliver the data protection best practices 3 Have three copies of your data Primary data + two backup copies Why? If something happens to one backup, you have another to fall back to 2 Store backup copies on two different media types Example: Tape, disk, secondary storage or Cloud Why? No one device will not affect the recoverability on another 1 Keep one copy offsite Example: Send tape offsite, replicate to remote disk storage or cloud Why? Physical separation between your backups incase of fire, flood or local ransomware infection While not shown on the side, naturally tape can also be an offsite copy, while a StoreOnce could also be an onsite third copy used to maintain long term retention and a Nimble being used to for the most recent restore points and fastest restores. 7-30 days of backups 7-30 days of backups Tenant 1 Backup Copy Job Tenant 2 Backup Copy Job

Micro Focus Data Protector architecture for MS Azure Stack
The number of VMs you can backup in parallel will depend on available network bandwith and method used (data dedupe, compression or original data). You can add a Media Server any time to solve bandwidth/load issues. Any DP client can be a Media Server! VMs Azure Hosts Bridged VM Media Servers Start at 2 Media Servers for redundancy and load balancing. Systems should be hosted outside of the Stack to work independant. Physical systems allow FC SAN access to Backup devices. 10Gbe Physical Tape FC SAN Virtual Tape LAN/WAN Cloud (Incl. Azure BLOB) Additionally, Data Protector supports backup targets including FC SAN to physical and virtual tape targets, Cloud repositories, and archive containers. Archive Container From here you have many choices where to store data. Since data can be moved or copied any time you can always fine-tune. The media format makes sure you swap any device with another without losing payload or meta-data.

High Level comparison of Azure Stack Data Protection ISV’s
Azure Backup Server Azure Site Recovery Commvault Veeam Veritas Micro Focus Data Protector Official Azure Stack Support Yes Azure Stack Data Protection Architecture Uses agent to protect Azure Stack VM For BC/DR and migration Uses Azure Stack API with or without Agent-in-Guest Uses Azure Stack API with Agent-in-Guest Uses agent to protect an Azure Stack VM Backup and Restore of full VM using Azure Stack APIs No Application and File level backup (Agent-in-Guest support) Only supports SQL, SharePoint, and Windows OS Migration of VM Disaster Recovery of VM Yes, only supports Azure Stack to Azure Azure Stack Blob storage backup and recovery Looking at the chart from left to right, you see Azure Backup Server and Azure Site Recovery. These are core components of the Azure Stack deployment. These features do not backup VM’s, workloads, tenant data, etc. They are designed to backup / replicate to the cloud. Site Recovery service: Site Recovery helps ensure business continuity by keeping business apps and workloads running during outages. Site Recovery replicates workloads running on physical and virtual machines (VMs) from a primary site to a secondary location. When an outage occurs at your primary site, you fail over to secondary location, and access apps from there. After the primary location is running again, you can fail back to it. Backup service: The Azure Backup service keeps your data safe and recoverable by backing it up to Azure. The key Data Protection ISV’s that HPE Azure Stack team has validated are Commvault, Veeam, Veritas, and Micro Focus Data Protector. All are Enterprise data protection ISV’s that have powerful backup, recovery, replication, and migration capabilities. There are others such as Acronis, Zerto, etc that do not offer official support for Azure Stack and they have not been validated. All have the ability to support multiple types of backup targets such as tape devices, disk, backup appliances, and cloud. However you need to note that some use API integration and some use Agent services for data protection.

F5 Application High Availability:
Border Device Border Device Border Device Border Device VE TOR 1 TOR 2 Hypervisor BMC Leveraging the Azure Stack Innovation Center, we created 2 environment similar to what you see here. Using two HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack stamps and installing a virtual instance of the F5 Big IP solution and ZeroDown to test and validate HA between workload virtual machines ( web servers 1,2,3,4) between the two stamps. On MAS 11 we created two web server vm’s and synched them to the second Azure Stack instance MAS 12. Then we successfully performed the following HA tests: Stop a web server 4 on Azure Stack MAS12 Web browser shows traffic no longer being delivered to node 4 Stop a web server 2 on Azure Stack MAS12 Web browser shows traffic no longer being delivered to MAS12 Web application remain functional. ZeroDown Application High Availability:
In Addition to the F5 HA solution, we have also validated another HA ISV Partner – ZeroDown. They have a similar HA solution for Microsoft Azure Stack that has been implemented for a mutual customer in the Asia Pacific region. This gives customers two options for application HA in Azure Stack. We leveraged a similar test environment as F5 for validation testing and successfully tested the solution. A solution brief and White Paper are in development.
