6 Reflecting meaning Therapist and client identify the client's values and perspectives underlying the client's story. This helps the client see whether she/he/they have conflicting beliefs, actions, or feelings. This helps the client understand themselves more deeply and clarify the changes he/she/they wants to make.

7 Identifying Deeper meanings
Deeper meanings are often embedded in strong feelings, including: Guilt Fear Anger Hopelessness Powerlessness Grief Low Self-Esteem Joy Desire Hope

8 Identifying meanings, 2 Deeper meanings are often experienced as conflicts with a) yourself, b) another person, or c) social values, including: Sources of shame Unmet needs Beliefs about morality Family, religious, and cultural values Beliefs about how others should behave Taboo desires

9 Identifying Meanings, 3 You are more able to identify deeper meanings if you: Practice a stance of openness to your client, and Maintain a curiosity about why the client’s story and feelings are especially important to him, her, or them. This requires you to: Stop yourself before you assume you understand, and Offer a tentative understanding and ask if you are correct.

10 Model for reflecting Meaning
It sounds like you feel ___________________________ (emotion word ) about ____________________________________________________ (fact or thought from story) because __________________________________________________. (deeper meaning) Is that right?

11 Model of reflecting meaning
A therapist's statement of the client's "deeper meaning" can continue “Because…: you believe…" you value…" in your experience..." it’s really important to you that…" in your culture…“ you secretly hope…”

12 Reflecting Meaning Example
Andreas came into his first session stating that he wanted to figure out whether to stay with his boyfriend. In the tenth session, he started telling you about yet another terrible argument they had and broke down in tears. Therapist reflecting meaning: “You seem so sad about your argument. I wonder if it is because you don’t know if you can save your relationship.”
