1 2019 MHS LIBRARY ORIENTATION

2 TODAY’S OBJECTIVES Learn about library procedures, materials, services, etc. Learn how the library can help with your studies & classes at MHS Participate in a fun activity to practice & help you remember what you learned today!

3 WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY! Mrs. O’Toole- Librarian
Mrs. Heschke- Library Assistant Can visit before & after school (with supervision), during study halls, with classes After-school alternative program- 3:00-5:00

4 EXPECTATIONS FOR LIBRARY USERS
To be Respectful To be Responsible To get Results: Doing research/assignments requiring library resources Recreational reading or book selection Quiet study time Please remember . . . Absolutely no food or drink in the library!

5 ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN LIBRARY:
You may listen to music with headphones as long as others around you can’t hear it! You may use your phone/electronic device for school- work if assigned With a class at the discretion of your teacher Ask Mrs. O’Toole or Mrs. Heschke if in a study hall No talking on cell phones without permission or playing games!

6 HOW DO I VISIT THE LIBRARY DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?
PRIVILEGE PASS- next year RESEARCH PASS STUDY HALL PASS CLASS VISITS New rule- if you have overdue books, you cannot take out anymore! 6

7 RESEARCH PASS ONLY Classroom TEACHERS issue Research Passes
The pass is green and requires a signature from the issuing teacher and the study hall monitor (go there first!); along with a brief description of the assignment Students must sign-in/sign-out to the library upon entering and exiting

8 STUDY HALL PASS Six students may come from each study hall when a class IS NOT working in the library Report to study hall first; NOT the library! Must stay the whole period

9 CLASS VISITS The library is closed to study
hall students when classes are scheduled Research & Privilege Passes may also be restricted depending on space Classes ALWAYS have priority for laptops/Chromebooks To see if the library is “open” ask your study hall monitor, check the library door where it is posted or online schedule

10 BORROWING MATERIALS Check-out materials at the Main Desk using your student ID number or name; use return slot 3 Books~ 2 weeks; 1 Magazine~ 3 days Flash drive~ 2 weeks Headphones- check-out in library only! Laptops/Chromebooks~ during school day only, by class period (return by 2:50pm at latest!)~ NOT ALLOWED IN LUNCHROOM/PP AREA! If overdues exist, no materials may circulate; you can be placed on the ineligible list! Please take care of library materials; there is a charge for lost or damaged materials! 10

11 FINDING LIBRARY MATERIALS
Newspapers- Rochester D & C and USA Today Magazines- Newest issues on display at end of book shelves; can use old issues for projects (ask Mrs. O’Toole) Books- Destiny Discover (icon on desktop or bookmark) Search by keyword, title, author, subject Get book reviews, summaries, author notes, place holds Search in any classroom & home Login to make collections or view collections & more! We will practice logging- on after this- User Name- ID, password- Medina 11

Fiction Section- arranged by category~New this year! Adventure, Classics, Dystopian, Fantasy, Historical, Horror, LGBT+, Mystery, Realistic, Romance, Science Fiction, Sport, Non-Fiction by Dewey number Biography & 920’s Short Stories Children’s Books- Juvenile Oversized Books Magazines Graphic Novels

13 COMPUTER PROCEDURES Logging in:
User Name: firstinitial, lastname (ex. jsmith) Password: last years, if forgot Mrs. O’Toole will reset! Change Password: Combo 8 characters! Letters, numbers, symbols- not your name!! Follow the MCSD Acceptable Use Policy NO INAPPRORIATE SITES, NO DOWNLOADING, ONLY “GAMES” ALLOWED ARE ON LIBRARY WEBPAGE UNDER “FUN LEARNING ACTIVITES”~ restricted certain times of school year

14 ONLINE INFORMATION SOURCES~ DATABASES
You will use these for projects at times All require passwords- available in the library or on your Google Classroom page for a library project Can access from home from the library webpage Examples: Britannica Online World Book Online Opposing Viewpoints

Class visit resources & links Online schedule Databases Destiny Discover~ Book Catalog Suggestions for books to read And more!

16 OTHER SERVICES…. Color Printer/Copier/Scanner- ask for help!
DMV Online Test- when of appropriate age! Plenty of New Books- coming in the next few weeks! Can borrow books from other schools- ILL Laminating machine- ask before using! Supply station~ please keep items in the library

17 Google What is it? G-Suite for education is the same set of apps that you know and love- Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Classroom and more- They are designed to bring teachers and students together! Cloud- You can get to your documents anytime, anywhere from any device ☺ Let’s practice…..

18 accounts Can teachers and students or send to outside addresses (gmail, yahoo, aol, etc.) Can access in G Suite address is as follows: (ex. Username/password same as you use to login to computers!!
