2 General Knowledge Category
The General Knowledge Category on the Journeyman Wireman’s test is the only knowledge portion of the test. You can not look up the answers to these questions in the Code like you can the rest of the questions. They are testing you on your general knowledge of electricity, Ohms Law, Kirchoffs Law, Faradays Law, grounding theory and basically how electrical circuits work. The following questions will help refresh you on these items and also give you some practice on basic math skills which will help you on questions in this category and through out the test. General Knowledge Category

3 Click on the slide to start the timer and begin the test
Be sure to place this presentation in Slide Show Mode if it is not already in that mode before proceeding The purpose of this drill is to help you improve your skill at finding answers to questions using the applicable fire codes and also to help increase your knowledge of the Fire Alarm codes. Each slide will contain a question. The question will remain in the screen for a period of 2 minutes then a notification will sound and the slide will transition to the next slide with the answer. After 15 seconds the next question will appear. During the test do not worry about the correct answers when those slide appear. You will be given an opportunity to review the answers with out the time at the end of the test. Click on the slide to start the timer and begin the test Instructions

4 Basic Math Operations 1. The decimal equivalent for the fraction 1/8 is ___________. .5 .25 .125 .333

5 Divide the lower number into the upper number of the fraction.
Answer C Divide the lower number into the upper number of the fraction. 1/8=.125

6 Electrical Theory and Operation
2. Current flowing into a node (or a junction) must be equal to current flowing out of it. This is ________________ first law. Ohms Faradays Kirchoffs Fredriechs

7 Answer C. Kirchoffs Electrical Theory

8 Electrical Theory and Operation and Algebra
3. What is the maximum distance that two 14 AWG copper conductors can be run if they carry 16A and the maximum allowable voltage drop is 10V? 50 feet 75 feet 100 feet 150 feet

9 Answer C. 100 feet 2KDI/CM=VD (2x12.9xDx 16)/4110= 10
Multiply both sides by 4110 2 x12.9xDx 16=41100 Simplify the left side multiplying the values 412.8D=41100 Divide both side by 412.8 D=99.56 Maximum distance of feet

10 NEC 4. Any change in the magnetic environment of a coil of wire will cause a voltage (emf) to be "induced" in the coil is part of ______________ law. Ohms Kirchoffs Faradays Teslas

11 Answer C. Faradays Electrical Theory

12 Electrical Theory and Operation
5. What is the current in amperes of an 18 kW, 208V, three phase load? 45 amperes 50 amperes 60 amperes 75 amperes

13 Answer C. 50 amperes VA/(Voltage x 1.732) 18000/360.22=49.96 50 A

6. The cross sectional area of a conductor is commonly expressed in _____________. Square inches Mils Circular mils None of these

15 Electrical Industry Understanding
Answer C. Circular Mils Electrical Industry Understanding

16 NEC 7. What is the cross sectional area of a 000 AWG wire?
167,800 cmil 212,965 cmil 16,510 cmil 6,530 cmil

17 Answer A. 167,800 cmil Chapter 9, Table 8

18 Electrical Theory and Operation
8. The larger the cross sectional area of a conductor the lower the resistance of the conductor because ________________. There are more paths for current flow than in smaller conductors There is less resistance in the material which is used for larger conductors Skin effect forces all the electrons to flow through the center of the wire and only one path of current flow. There is less resistance in the insulation of larger conductors.

19 Answer A. There are more paths for current flow than in smaller conductors Electrical Theory and Operation

20 Electrical Theory and Operation
9. What is the direct current resistance of an 8 AWG sold aluminum conductor which is 356 feet long? 1.26 ohms 1.28 ohms .3987 ohms ohms

21 Answer Chapter 9, Table 8. 1.26 ohms in 1000 feet D. .44856 ohms
1.26/ 1000= ohms per foot x 356= ohms

22 Electrical Theory and Application
10. One volt of EMF is required to push one ampere of current through one ohm of resistance to provide 1 watt of power is ________________ law. Ohms Kirchoffs Faradays Teslas

23 Answer A. Ohms Law Electrical Theory
