2 Objective: Students will analyze and summarize the progression of China as a modern country and be measured through their Cornell notes, QW, discussion, and exit slip.

3 Setting the Stage The trend toward democracy around the world also affected China to a limited degree China’s Communist gov. clamped down on these reforms and maintained a firm grip on power

Agriculture- created quotas for food and Industry- permitted private businesses Defense- needed to update their weapons to stay competitive Science & Technology- welcomed foreign technology and investments

Ideas of democracy and political freedom were basic outside of China 100,000 students rallied for democracy in Tiananmen square Deng ordered more than 250,000 troops to maintain order Soldiers attacked protestors and arrested 10,000 people
