WRITING in CSCD03 Sarah King, Centre for Teaching and learning

2 Where you may be at this point:
1. Working on Assignment #1: due May 26 still reading, gathering ideas research on Bill C-51 making notes for your arguments 2. May have some ideas for your term paper, with proposal due June 2, but probably haven’t started working on it seriously some concern about the length and scope some concern about whether your writing is ‘good’ enough

8 Intros: Look carefully to see how other Writers set them up
Background History of the issue or concern What is commonly believed Past research in this area Gap or Problem What gaps or problems are there with the past research or beliefs? What questions still remain? Purpose or thesis What the author wants us to see or understand The author’s argument or purpose for writing good jumping off point, as it helps you think about where you stand in relation to research on the topic

9 Notice the language that articles you read use to move the reader through the Introduction:
Background It is commonly feared that… Past research has shown that… In his book The Shallows, Nicholas Carr argues that… Gap or Problem While some studies have shown____, others have… However there is some disagreement… Purpose or thesis The purpose of this paper is to explore… in order to … A closer analysis using recent research into___ reveals that…

10 You can Adapt this model to your own Intro :
Background What is the problem or issue that you are writing about? What has been discovered so far? What have others said about this issue/problem? Gap or Problem What needs to be solved? What are the competing perspectives that need to be resolved? Purpose or thesis What is your solution, or your purpose for writing, and what does your reader gain?

11 Making an effective Argument
Audience and purpose determine style and content Anticipate questions from a skeptical or difficult reader Audience Style Content Purpose Borrow money – friend—urgency of need, importance and relevance, when you will be able to pay back —parents—responsibility, learning, value of what you want the money for —bank –credit history, collateral, Draw the triangle here Audience—knowledgeable, skeptical, rational concerned about privacy

12 Revision To revise you must look at your paper like a reader, not the writer Do the ideas fit together? Have you left anything out that your reader needs to understand or that would be persuasive? Check paragraphs, sections for cohesion – try a reverse outline

13 Paragraph Claim Evidence or discussion
Warrant (significance of information—this is not always necessary) What would be a good example of warrant Argument to parents: you should lend me $500 for a trip to Montreal. Why? Because the last time you lent me money to go to New York I didn’t pay you back –that was two years ago and I am much more responsible now—opportunity to demonstrate how much more responsible I am

14 Cohesion Choose a paragraph from your draft
What is the topic sentence? How does it support the overall argument you are making, or what is this paragraph’s purpose in the overall scheme of this section of your paper? topic sentence is not what the paragraph is ABOUT, but what the paragraph will DO

15 Cohesion in the section
Put all the topic sentences into a list Do they take the reader step-by-step through the argument you are building or the information you are presenting in this section?

16 Known-to-New Your term paper should be a critical analysis and discussion of a problem or issue in computing and its effects on society. It need not include any novel research of your own…. The topic may be quite narrow or somewhat broad, but shouldn’t be too unfocused. The paper must not be on a technical aspect of computers….

18 Lack of cohesion Your term paper should be a critical analysis and discussion of a problem or issue in computing and its effects on society. When citing a Web site, you should include not only the URL and the date on which you accessed it, but as much other information as possible. The UTSC Library offers help with research for term papers.

20 build bridges between ideas
Your term paper should be a critical analysis and discussion of a problem or issue in computing and its effects on society. In order to write it, you may need to consult various Web sites. When citing a Web site, you should include not only the URL and the date on which you accessed it, but as much other information as possible. You will also need to do research using other sources. To get help with research, please visit the UTSC Library.

21 Editing Edit on paper or screen? Screen: change font and size
Paper: better for seeing proportions. Long paragraphs: do they need to be divided? Is your introduction too long? Read out loud

22 Research and Writing Technologies
What tools do you use to help you plan, draft, and revise your writing? Keep track of research? E.g. Spelling and grammar-checkers Citation builders Others?

23 Elements of your TERM paper
1. Description of the problem or issue and the relevant facts 2. A thoughtful analysis of the competing points of view with discussion of their strong and weak points 3. Synthesis or conclusions to be reached from your research

24 1. Description of the problem or issue and relevant facts: how good is your research?
Do you have CRAAP? Currency Relevance Accuracy Authority Purpose

25 2. analysis of the competing points of view with discussion of their strong and weak points
How good is the research methodology? How convincing is the argument? Did the writer draw appropriate conclusions from the data? Is the author of the source an authority in the field? Does he or she have a possible bias?  How good is the evidence?  CRITICAL THINKING

26 3. Synthesis or conclusions to be reached from your research
Synthesis = the “conversation” between sources (and you)
