2 Do you know anything about oil spills?
๐Ÿ This is a Pear Deck Text Slide.

3 Introductory In this presentation we will give you basic information about oil spills. We will provide articles, pictures, videos, and fun facts! Oil spills are caused by the release of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon that are put into the environment. Especially in the marine ecosystem, due to human activity thats why its is a form of pollution. Oil spills usually happen in the ocean or coastal waters, but they can happen on land too. Oil spills can have a huge effect on animals, creatures and even humans.

5 Oil spill (Basic Info) What damage is caused?
Oil spills cause damage to marine birds and mammals as well as fish and shellfish. Why is oil spilled in the first place? Oil spills happen by tankers, barges, pipelines, refineries, drilling rigs, and storage facilities. Spills can also be caused by people making mistakes or being careless. Who should have to clean it up? The Coast Guard, The Environmental Protection agency should clean it up or the people that made the oil spill. What are some examples of oil spills that have taken place? -The Ixtoc 1 Oil Spill (1979) -The Kolva River Spill (1994) -Bp โ€˜s Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (2010) How can we clean up oil spills? You can contain it with a giant underwater dome, utilize bacteria to eat up the oil, booms and skimmers.

6 What oil spill happened in 2010?

7 Questions How long do you think it takes to clean up an oil spill?
Do you think it's easy to clean up oil spills? Questions

8 Oil eating bacteria (deep ocean!!)
Deep in the Mariana Trench scientists have discovered a unique bacteria that eats on oil. In 2010 similar bacteria was used to help deal with the Deepwater Horizon, but with new research the Mariana Trench is home to these life forms of bacteria.

9 Some companies use oil spills as part of their marketing campaign
Did the company of Dawn put the oil on the duck to wash it off? Dawn declared โ€œThis was not footage of an actual rescue. They intentionally covered at least three animals with tempera paint and corn syrup to simulate oil, just so they could wash them on camera.โ€ So they did not put oil on the animals.

12 BP oil spill On April 20, 2010, in the Gulf of mexico the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry happened. 11 people killed and 17 left injured billion dollars to clean it up. The oil spill has likely harmed or killed approximately 82,000 birds of 102 species, approximately 6,165 sea turtles, and up to 25,900 marine mammals, including bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, melon-headed whales and sperm whales.

14 Plasma Sponge New Plasma Sponge For Oil Spill Cleanups
New Plasma Sponge For Oil Spill Cleanups By: Bette Nijboer The plasma sponge will be used to selectively and efficiently adsorb hydrocarbons from water, with negligible water uptake. Using this sorbent shows several advantages, including the possibility of fast recovery from the oil. according to team member Silvia Goyanes โ€œDue to its versatile deposition, the CN could be used for surface treatment of textiles or metal meshes, producing membranes with potential applications as selective barriers for oil/water separationโ€ Ang plasma sponge ay gagamitin sa pili at mahusay na mag-aalis ng mga hydrocarbons mula sa tubig, na may hindi gaanong pagtaas ng tubig.

15 Split ends can clean oil spills!!
How your split ends can help clean oil spills By: Gina Barton Hair is hydrophobic & biosorbent which means it repels water and will collect heavier metals & other pollutants such as oil. Hair is also sufficient and renewable resource. Hair booms and hair mats havenโ€™t gone mainstream yet, especially with large-scale environmental disasters.
