2. After Frederick Dupree died, James bought Dupree’s heard of buffalo and took them to his ranch. At the ranch James built a fence around the heard and raised them.

3. After his death, estate officials began to disperse the herd, gradually selling buffalo over the next 13 years. A sale was made to Custer State Park, which still owns a large heard today.

4. He was called “ The King of Buffalo” because he saved so many buffalo
He was called “ The King of Buffalo” because he saved so many buffalo. James was one of the fist South Dakotans named to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

5. He married Sarah Larribee. She was part French and part Cheyenne Indian.
