5 Implementation Tips Start Small! Find a core group who understand SL and Common Core - Coach them and provide opportunities to model for other teachers. Collaborate with Leadership - District level, building level, department level. Make PD a Priority - High quality PD on blending SL with current practice and current curriculum. Develop a Detailed Implementation Plan - WHAT AND HOW!

6 John Kotter - Why change leaders fail:
Allowing Too Much Complacency Failing to Create a Sufficiently Powerful Guiding Coalition Underestimating the Power of Vision Under-communicating the Vision by a Factor of 10 Permitting Obstacles to Block the New Vision Failing to Create Short-term Wins Declaring Victory Too Soon Neglecting to Anchor Changes Firmly in the Culture

7 Dreams and Wishes... What service-learning program do you wish existed? What things could be better about your current service-learning program? Change your wishes and gripes into a “How might we”...

8 Establish Goals- Define Constraints
Make a list of your end goals. Decide how success will be measured. Define constraints you need to keep in mind.

9 Anticipate Barriers What barriers might you encounter along the way?
Play the role of individual stakeholders. What other perceptions will you encounter? Who do you need to communicate with in order to be successful?

10 Plan Research What else do you need to know?
What analogous locations can you learn from? Service focused industries and organizations - Schools in MO: Kirkwood School District, Study Alternative High in Springfield, Belton, Blue Eye R-V Who are your participants? Whose perception are you lacking? Who are the experts you will involve? College level - Campus Compact members are a great resource!

11 Build a Guiding Coalition
Who are your core team members? What are their goals and roles? Who are your extended team members?

12 Create Your Timeline What is your to-do list?
Put major events on your timeline. When/where will you get your team together? When/how will you train staff? When/how will you communicate your vision?

13 PLAN What will you have accomplished in 30 days? (end of March) 60 days? (end of April) 90 days? (end of school year)
