3 Practice Questions The Founding of Singapore
Give two reasons why the British needed a new trading settlement in the early 19th century [4m] Firstly, to break Dutch trade monopoly. The Dutch did not allow the British to trade at any of the Dutch-controlled ports except Batavia. Secondly, Penang and Bencoolen were unsuitable. They were not located near the main trading area in the Archipelago and thus could not protect the British ships as they sailed along the Straits of Melaka from India to China.

4 Explain 3 reasons why Singapore was chosen as the
new trading settlement? [6m] Firstly, Singapore occupied a central position on the main trading route between India and China. It could better protect the British ships sailing from India to China. It save would save traders time and money and thus was more profitable for them. Secondly, it was not occupied by Dutch. The Dutch cannot object. Thirdly, it had an excellent harbour. It could protect the ships from the stormy winds and had deep waters for the ships to port. It also had a good supply of drinking water.
