2 The Construct of an Era An era is a period of time, a set of years that share a major characteristic. Examples: Middle Ages  war between kingdoms because Rome fell apart, feudalism, Black Death Renaissance  “rebirth” of Europe: wars are ending and the kingdoms are settling in  new ideas, learning, technology, age of exploration

4 Chapter 2 – New Empires in the Americas
1400s-1600s Europeans are exploring and establishing their power in the Americas (North and South America) Chapter 2: Section 2, 3, 4, 5 2: Europeans reach the Americas: Columbian Exchanged is created. 3: Spain Builds an Empire 4: The Race for Empires: Different European countries are competing with each other to take over lands in the Americas. Great Britain defeats the mighty Spanish Armada (Sir Francis Drake and his sea dogs – small fast ships). This opens up the Americas to the other European countries. 5: Beginnings of Slavery in the Americas – Europeans forced millions of African slaves to work in their colonies.

5 Chapter 2.2 Key Terms and People Europeans Reach the Americas
Christopher Columbus (p 42) – a sailor from Genoa, Italy. Convinced that he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. Landed in the Bahamas and claimed the Americas for Spain. The Line of Demarcation (p 44): The new lands created conflict between Portugal and Spain because they both wanted to claim those lands. Pope Alexander VI (6th) (from Spain) created this imaginary line that divided the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas. Portugal could claim lands east of the line of demarcation. Spain could claim all the lands west of it.
