Each state needs to work with its Legislature to explore current code and determine if change is necessary There are a variety of issues that create code limitations around curriculum embedded performance assessment Instructional time Money

Attention to detail makes all the difference in implementation Curriculum Policies Policy revisions must align to new Common Core Standards Instructional governance policies must be revised to address what is expected with benchmark/classroom assessments and, eventually, the new common core assessment

Assessment Policies Policy revisions must address performance tasks via benchmark/classroom assessments Accountability Policies Policy revision should include other assessment besides reading and math One summative assessment should not be the sole indicator of accountability

2005 State Board of Education discussed the urgency for change Increased the rigor of the state content standards to include national and international rigor Increased the rigor of the state assessment to align with the new content standards 2006 Determined systematic approach necessary to implement West Virginia’s vision for 21st century learning called Global21 Reorganized staff to achieve greater focus Gathered input from educators through Voices from the Field Launched Principal Leadership Development Program Developed resources to support Global21 (Teach21 website) Sought national and international input on standards
