1 26 / Thursday Kaupapa: Observe and draw the structure of a plant cell

2 Do you remember? Every living thing is made up of _______.
What is the name of this part of the cell?

3 Cells

4 Practical – Observing Cells

5 Animal Cell Nucleus Cell membrane Cytoplasm

6 Plant Cells

7 Practical – Onion Cells

8 Practical – Leaf Cells

9 Plant Cell Nucleus Chloroplast Cell wall Cytoplasm Vacuole

10 Plant Cell Nucleus – controls what a cell does
Cytoplasm – contains nutrients and other chemicals Cell wall – hard outer covering Chloroplasts –they contain chlorophyll which is needed for photosynthesis Vacuole – contains fluid which supports the cell and is used to store substances

11 What are the similarities and differences?

12 Animal Cells Plant Cells

13 Animal Cell Plant Cell Nucleus contains the genetic material which controls what a cell does and how it develops. Cytoplasm is mostly water containing nutrients and other chemicals. Cell membrane is a thin ‘skin’ around the cell. Cell wall is a very stiff outer covering. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll which is needed for photosynthesis Vacuole contains fluid which helps support the cell and is used to store substances.

14 Animal Cells vs. Plant Cells
Compare & Contrast: Animal Cells vs. Plant Cells

15 What have we learned today?
What makes the plants cells green? Why are they important? Describe one difference between an animal cell and a plant cell
