1 Measuring Metric Length
Solve problems in various contexts involving conversion of weights, capacities, geometric measurements, and times within measurement systems using appropriate units.

2 I can… Self Assessment Measure and express metric lengths precisely
5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

3 Metric Units of Length 1 mm = 0.1 cm 1 cm = 10 mm 1 m = 1000 mm
1 mm = m 1 cm = 0.01 m 1 m = 100 cm millimeter centimeter

4 Steps for Measuring Length
Always start by lining up the object you’re measuring with zero on the ruler. Hold the ruler with your left hand. Read the last number on your ruler that is below the object.

5 Let’s Practice! 7 centimeters

6 Steps for Measuring Length
If the object’s length doesn’t land exactly on a number, read the closest centimeter to the left. Next, count the number of millimeter marks. Remember that a millimeter is 1/10 of a centimeter. 2 centimeters (2 cm) + 8 millimeters (0.8 cm) = 2.8 cm

7 Let’s Practice! 4 centimeters (4 cm) + 6 millimeters (0.6 cm) = 4.6 cm

8 Measure to the nearest millimeter
4 centimeters (4 cm) + 6 millimeters (0.6 cm) = 4.6 cm 4.6 cm X 10 = 46 mm

9 Measure to the nearest meter
5 centimeters (5 cm) + 1 millimeters (0.1 cm) = 5.1 cm 0.51 m

10 Let’s Practice! 5 centimeters (5 cm) + 7 millimeters (0.7 cm) = 5.7 cm

11 Measure to the nearest meter!
5 centimeters (5 cm) + 7 millimeters (0.7 cm) = 5.7 cm 0.57 m

12 Measure to the nearest millimeter!
5 centimeters (5 cm) + 7 millimeters (0.7 cm) = 5.7 cm 57 mm

Measure the length on the title “Mixed Review” on page 129 to the nearest tenth of a centimeter. The seat of a chair is exactly 43 centimeters from the floor. Write that distance in millimeters.
