1 FULLVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH
WEDNESDAY NIGHT 6:00 P.M.

2 Before the Resurrection and after Death

3

4 What happens when we breathe our final breath?
First our immaterial soul and spirit will be separated from our physical body. (Eccl 12:7) Earthly death is not an obliteration of the person, but a bringing of his corruptible body back to its original composition. (1 Cor 15) Second, we will immediately receive the judgment that will determine our eternal destiny. (Heb 9:27) The destination clearly depends upon whether a person has repented and trusted in Christ or whether they have rejected their only hope of eternal life (Acts 4:12; 16:30-31). Third, There is no second chance and there is no cycle of reincarnation or purgatory. (Lk 16:23; 2 Cor 5:8; Heb 9:27) Fourth, At God’s appointed time, there will be a final resurrection where the spirit will be unified with the resurrected body.(Jo 5:25; 1 John 3:2)

5 The Intermediate State
The intermediate state or interim state refers to a person's "intermediate" existence between one's death and the universal resurrection. It deals with what kind of body, if any, believers in heaven have while they wait for their physical bodies to be resurrected. The Bible teaches that deceased believers are with the Lord. while their bodies are still in the grave. (2 Cor 5:6-8; Phil 1:23) (1 Cor 15:50-54;1 Thess 4:13-17) Luke 16:23 affirms that those who have died are conscious and have a spiritual body of some kind. Lazarus, Abraham, and the rich man were all personally identifiable, and they could see, hear, speak, and feel.

6 THE STATE OF THE SOUL AFTER DEATH
Sinners as well as saints will continue to exist forever (Eccl. 12:7; Matt. 25:46; Rom. 2:8-10; Rev. 14:11; 20:10) The wicked (unsaved) will suffer eternal punishment, which means that they will be forever conscious of pain which they will recognize as their just punishment. (Mk 9:43-48; Lk 16:23) There will be degrees in the punishment of the wicked (Luke 12:47-48; Rom. 2:12) Scripture represents the state of unbelievers after death as a fixed state (no purgatory). (Luke 16:19-31; 2 Cor 5:9-10; 2 Pet 2:4-9)

7 What is Abraham’s bosom?
According to Judaism Abraham’s bosom was the place of the righteous who died before Christ and who were not admitted to heaven until his resurrection. (Mat 27:52-53; Lk 23:43) The Bosom of Abraham occurs in only one New Testament passage, the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, which is only in the gospel of Luke (16:19–31) When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He led the Old Testament saints from Abraham’s Bosom to their new dwelling place with Him in the Heaven of heavens. (Eph 4:8)

8 What is Abraham’s bosom?
Prior to Jesus’ ascension into Heaven both Abraham’s Bosom and the place of torment existed in the earth as the place of the dead. Since Jesus’ ascension, only one place remains Hell. In the place of torment, the unrighteous await a final judgment that is yet to come, which is referred to as the Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20: At that time, all the souls in the place of torment will be bodily raised and judged. They will go to their eternal destination, which the Bible calls the Lake of Fire (Revelations 20:15). The Lake of Fire is called the second death.

9 WHAT ABOUT MATTHEW 27:50-53? The graves were opened by the earthquake at Jesus’ death, but the dead in them did not rise until after his resurrection. It is probable that they were persons who had recently died, and they appear to have been known in Jerusalem; had the ancient saints risen, they would not have been known, and would not so soon have been credited as those who had recently died. These few opened graves were to be a testimony of Christ’s power over death and the grave.

10 The Apostle Paul taught that all Christians, even those whose bodies had “perished,” would be given new, resurrected bodies (1 Cor. 15). The resurrection body will not be an entirely new creation (1 Cor 15:43,44,53,54) The resurrection body will sustain a similar relation to the present body, but not every detail (no blood or affects of brokenness) (I Cor 15:37-39)

11

12 The Resurrection Body (1 Cor 15:35-44)
Our Resurrection bodies will be the same but different. (1 Cor 15:50) Our Resurrection bodies will be superior to our current bodies. Our Resurrection bodies Will be patterned after Christ’s body (Phil 3:2; 1 Jo 3:2; 1 Cor 15:49) Our resurrection bodies will be incapable of dying.(1 Cor 15:50-54) Our resection bodies may have extra-dimensional qualities (Jo 20:19-20)

13 Bodies of Believers We know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is”. (Phil 3:20-21; 1 Jo 3:2) From Corruption to Incorruption: From Mortality to Immortality- The moment we begin to live we commence to die. The body’s destiny is death, decay, and dissolution.(Job 14:1) From Dishonour to Glory- Our bodies were neglected and have been broken and diseased by sin before we ever came to a knowledge of truth.

14 Bodies of Believers It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power - Our bodies have their limitations. Jesus said the spirit sometimes is willing, but the flesh is weak. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body- The words natural and spiritual, as applied to the body, have respect not so much to the nature of the substance of which the body is composed, as to the uses or purposes which it is intended to serve.”

15 Bodies of Unbelievers The Bible reaches that there will be a resurrection of the just and the unjust. However the Bible has less to say about the resurrection of the unjust and is silent on the nature of the resurrected body of the unjust. The unsaved will be raised after the millennium, judged and cast into the lake of fire. (Dan 12:2; Jo 5:28-29; Rev 20:12-13) The unjust will suffer the eternal punishment of God in their bodies. (Lk 13:27-28; Rev 19:20; 20:10-15)

16 WILL YOU BE LEFT BEHIND?

17 What Will We Do in Heaven?
We will see God face to face and we will have fellowship in His presence for all eternity. (Mat 5:8; Rev 22:3-4) Our life in heaven involves worship. (Rev 19:1-5) There is the aspect of rest. Heavenly rest here does not mean a cessation from activity, but the experience of reaching a goal of crucial importance. It is a Sabbath Rest. (Heb 4:9-11; Rev 14:13) We will serve the Lord.(1 Cor 6:3; Rev 3:21; 22:3) We will experience fellowship with God and with one another (1 Cor 13:12)
