3 9.3 The Persian Wars

4 The Persian Wars Around 400BC, the Persians were ready to expand into Europe. they soon started to clash with the Greeks because they have colonies in the Mediterranean area. Under the rule of Cyrus, Persians had control over Greek cities in Anatolia. Around 499 BC, Those Greeks revolted against the Persian rulers.

5 The Persian Wars The Athenians sent warships to help the rebels, but the Persians crushed the Uprising. The Persian King Darius was angry that the Athenians interfered.

6 Battle at Marathon Around 490BC, Darius sent ships and an army to invade Greece. The Persians waited for several days for the Athenians to arrive. However, They did not show. So the Persians sailed into Athens to attack them by sea. The Athenians caught them out of formation in the sea and defeated the Persians.

7 Land and Sea Battles After the defeat at marathon, the Persians wanted revenge. Under a new ruler, xerxes, they invaded Greece. The Greek city-states came together to fight the Persians. Sparta supplied the soldiers while Athens provided the naval forces and created a plan. the Greek city-states were not powerful enough to defeat the Persians at Thermopylae.

8 Battle at Plataea After the death of Sparta’s ruler, Leonidas, Athenians continued to try and conquer the Persians. The two navies would fight against one another. The Greeks had fewer ships. However, they were smaller and faster than the Persians. While the battle was happening at sea, the Persians marched into Athens and set their town on fire. The Greek city-states continued to fight the Persians at the battle of Plataea and defeated them. The goal was to free the Greek-city states in Anatolia from Persian rule.

9 Decline of Persia After the Persians had been defeated, their armies were no longer strong enough. Additionally, the kings charged high taxes on the people to build magnificent structures. As Persia weakened, it became open to outside attacks.
