1 Oxidation and Reduction, Displacement and Rusting.
By the end of this lesson I will be able to: describe what oxidation and reduction are Describe what a redox reaction is Recognise species that have undergone oxidation and reduction Write word and symbol equations for displacement reactions Explain why rusting is a redox reaction and how rusting can be prevented

2 Rearrange the letters into words
Nooidaxti Notciduer Oxidation Reduction

3 Oxidation is loss of electrons
E.g. Na  Na+ + e- Reduction is gain of electrons E.g. Br e-  2Br- In a redox reaction something is oxidised and something else is reduced

4 O I L R G Oxidation Is Loss Reduction Gain

5 Redox reactions can be forced in either direction.
Something is oxidised if it loses electrons. An oxidising agent takes electrons off something else. Something is reduced if it gains electrons. A reducing agent pushes electrons onto something else.

6 Fe turns into Fe2+. Has it been oxidised or reduced
Fe turns into Fe2+. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons. Fe2+ turns into Fe. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons. Fe2+ turns into Fe3+. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons. Fe3+ turns into Fe2+. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons. Cl2 turns into 2Cl–. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons. 2Cl– turns into Cl2. Has it been oxidised or reduced? Explain what happens to the electrons.

7 Worksheet C6b 3 – Redox reactions answers
Oxidised, it has lost (two) electrons Reduced, it has gained (two) electrons Oxidised, it has lost (one) electron Reduced, it has gained (one) electron Reduced, it has gained electrons (one per atom, two per molecule) Oxidised, (each chloride ion) has lost (one) electron
