1 Balancing Redox Reactions with Oxidation Numbers (see p 462) 1.Assign oxidation number 2.Identify oxidation and reduction 3.Determine the # of e- lost and gained per atom or ion, then multiply by subscripts to determine the number of electrons transferred.

2 4.Determine the lowest common multiple for electrons from step 3. 5.Multiply the electrons by a coefficient required to reach the lowest common multiple. Place the coefficients into the equation. 6.Balance other atoms by inspection if possible

3 For Neutral Environments: add H2O to balance O and H atoms as needed For Acidic Environments: add H2O to balance O atoms add H+ to balance H atoms
