Reading Questions

2. What will happen today
We will complete the Reading section of Language Paper 2
Before each question is attempted, I will explain what the examiners are looking for, how long you should spend on each question, and give exam technique tips
We’re doing this because it is highly effective!
You’re given 1 hr including reading time for the reading section, but obviously today’s session will take longer than that.
You will be reflecting on your performance in next week’s lessons with your class teacher
It is imperative that you listen and follow then instructions carefully to get the most from this session.

3. Write your name on the insert and the answer booklet
You will putting your insert inside your booklet at the end
Write the name of your teacher on the top right corner of your answer booklet.

4. FIRST TIP: DO NOT LEAVE ANY QUESTION BLANK.
FOR THE LONGER QUESTIONS THE ONLY WAY TO GET 0 MARKS IS TO WRITE NOTHING AT ALL, SO YOU SHOULD WRITE AT LEAST ONE WORD TO GET ONE MARK!

5. READING SECTION
You will be given two non-fiction texts to read and will have to answer 4 questions.
You had to answer 8 for the Edexcel paper: hopefully this will be a little less taxing.
You will be given one 20th/21st and one 19th Century non-fiction text of about 40 lines
You need to spend 15 minutes reading through both texts before you start writing answers to the questions

6. Active Reading
In the 15 minutes reading time you should be doing the following:
First, read all four questions and highlight/underline the key words
Read both articles to make sense of them
Highlight any useful quotes and make notes
It is also a good idea to rule-off sections of the text that are specified for Q1 and Q3, so that when you answer the questions you know exactly where to look
We will be using all of this time today, before moving on to the questions.

7. Timing for the Reading Section
Another plus for the AQA exam is that it’s quite simple to manage your time.
After the 15 minutes reading time, you will have 45 minutes to complete Section A.
You should spend roughly 1 minute per mark on each question
40 marks are available for Section A, plus 15 minutes reading time is 55 minutes. What can you do with this time?
Check over your answers, or write more for Q3 or Q4 after you have checked the others.

8. It is very important that identify the part of the source that you need to look at. You should have ruled if off during the ‘Reading Time,’ if not do so now!

9. Summarise similarities and differences between an aspect of the two texts
Make inferences ( work things out from clues in the text)
Use evidence and explain differences between the texts

10. As this is an isolated extract, rule off lines 18-25 if you didn’t during the ‘Reading Time.’
Analyse language in a short section from one of the texts
Use quotations from the text
Use correct subject terminology to describe language

11. Compare the methods the writers use to convey their different perspectives and feelings (eg is there bias? Has anything been left out or emphasised on purpose? What is the tone (mood) of each text?
Compare how the two writers convey their perspectives (opinions/ points of view)
Support your response with references to both texts
Structural viewpoint: How are we presented the events?
Whole text structure: chronological or not?
Narrative perspective: 1st person 3rd person?
Tone; relaxed/frantic/serious/humorous?
Language features: alliteration, onomatopoeia etc
Figurative language: similes?metaphors?
