1 Core themes in sociology
A taste of Sociology Core themes in sociology Title page

2 The core themes 1. Socialisation , culture and identity
2. Social differentiation , power and stratification These themes are applied to particular substantive areas of sociology. These themes are interpreted broadly as threads running's through many areas of social life . 3. Students must also understand the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the roles of ‘values’ 4. Globalisation – we must not forget Will introduce students to the core themes in sociology

3 Core theme 1: Socialisation Secondary Socialisation : Education
What are values? What are your personal values ? What are your Schools values ? How does the school put their values (transmission) into action? Values are general principles and guidelines General starter – getting them to think about what values are . When everyone gives a feedback , you guys can start off first by speaking about your own values and what the schools values stand for. Socialisation is how culture is passed on Socialisation is the way in which culture is passed on from generation to generation It begins in childhood in the family (primary) and continues in school (secondary) into adult life As society’s values are internalised by socialisation , so that they become a part of your way of thinking

4 Sociologists argue that education transmits many values
Meritocracy – everyone has a chance of succeeding regardless of your background Maintains the position of the middle class Students in groups of three will be given three minutes on the ttimer to note down as many points as possible from their school experience for each value 2 x 6 = 12 minutes for the task and then 3-5 minutes to discuss these Find evidence from your own experience of school

5 Find evidence from your own experience of school
Reinforces patriarchy (male dominance) Competition Students in groups of three will be given three minutes on the ttimer to note down as many points as possible from their school experience for each value 2 x 6 = 12 minutes for the task and then 3-5 minutes to discuss these Find evidence from your own experience of school

6 Find evidence from your own experience of school
Students create own values Values that are global Students in groups of three will be given three minutes on the ttimer to note down as many points as possible from their school experience for each value 2 x 6 = 12 minutes for the task and then 3-5 minutes to discuss these Find evidence from your own experience of school

7 Core theme 2 : Sociological theories
1.The ruling ideas in society are those of the ruling class 2.A persons identity is purely a matter of her or his personal choice , regardless of social factors 3.Women will never achieve equality as long as men hold the positions of power in society 4.It is everyone’s interest to pull together at work for the benefit of society as a whole 5. Some people may see amber traffic light as a warning to speed up before it turns red . Others may see it as a sign to slow down before stopping. In order to understand such behaviour , you need to understand the meaning people give to events. Students will be given 5 minutes to read and pick the statement they agree with . You guys will go around asking which one they agree with and why , which one they disagree with and why Which statement do you agree with the most ?

8 There is different ways of seeing society
I will introduce this to them Structural view : we are shaped by the way society is organised , We behave according to society’s expectations Social action view : we have free will and choice, we have the power to create society through our actions and interactions

9 Imagine if you wanted to study the family suggest three things
Structuralist approach will be interested in studying 7 minute task perhaps more This one will be the toughest as these are new terms. Both of you must clearly explain the difference between the two. And just go around helping them to come up with some points What evidence would you use to support each approach ? Social action approach will be interested in studying

10 Core theme 3 :Sociology in a global context
Globalisation is the idea that the world is becoming more connected . Improved technology and communication , an increase in TNCs and more migration means globalisation has affected many areas of Sociology . What affect do you think it has had on the family , education system, crime patterns and religion ? Last task , all they need to think about is how the images link to globalisation and the global world./ Again go around and using your questioning technique ask them what they think the connection is . Examples of questions will include , what do you see? How can crime have a link to globalisation ? How are family patterns changing etc.
