1 Grd 10: Study Skills Term 2 Lesson 1

2 You are just a few weeks away from your first set of exams for Grade 10. Exams can be very stressful if you are not well prepared. On the other hand they can also be very rewarding when you are well prepared.

3 Lets start by listening to a short extract from a story… https://youtu
Tell learners to listen carefully and we’ll get back to this later in the lesson. 6min. Play clip by clicking on the hyperlink in the above slide – it will take you to the audio website.

4 Take a moment to think back on some of your study habits in the past
Take a moment to think back on some of your study habits in the past. Mention to your group how you prepared for exams at the end of last year. Allow time for short group discussion on some methods used in the past.

5 Let’s take a moment to learn a few helpful study methods…
Mind Maps & Visualisation Note- taking

6 NOTE-TAKING Used to help you remember and to study for your upcoming exams. Spend a few moments explaining each of these note taking techniques and how to do them. 1) Draw a margin down the left of your page. Use this space to put the main points once you have taken notes. This is very helpful with subjects where lots of notes need to be written down in a lesson.

7 2) Use colours when working with diagrams or summaries to emphasise the importance of certain terms. This is also helpful when analysing what is being asked in a particular question. 3) An index comes in handy when you have lots of notes and you want to organise how to find them. You could also use an index to cross referance between sections. 4) A whiteboard can be very helpful to practice exercises in things like maths or subjects where there is some working out or drawings. 5) Tracing paper is really helpful when you want to record certain diagrams and put them into your notes. You could then practice labeling on the tracing paper.

8 MIND MAPS & VISUALISATION
This is a tool that helps you to study by putting information into a visual way. It helps you to sort out information and simplify long passages. Spend a few moments explaining what a mind map is and how to use it. 15min till here.

9 Let’s take a moment to see where these study methods could be used with your studies this term.
Refer to Activity_1- allow about 5min for learners to work through each method and apply it to different subjects they take. These notes should end up in their note book. If not finished the rest can be done for homework.

10 How well did you listen to the story at the beginning of the lesson?
Write the correct letter down only. 1) This person had blue eyes… A)Jack B) Stephanie C) Mortan Lawdale Write these answers into your notebook.

15 Some tips to improve listening..
Focus from the moment that you are required to listen. Block out all distractions. Make notes – mostly key words or summaries while you are listening. Picture yourself involved in the story. Imagine the setting and characters and even try imagining the smell of the places. Repeat the information from the story in your own words. Make notes on worksheet from the ppt. If time is a concern, you cold copy these notes at a later stage.

16 When we study we need to LISTEN, READ and UNDERSTAND!
Seven Reading Techniques or Styles are the following: Scanning. Skimming. Active Reading. Detailed. Speed. Structure-Proposition-Evaluation use this article to help you explain the different techniques or styles.

17 The secret to doing well SQ3R
Watch this clip and then introduce the homework for next week. Choose a section from work that was covered in a subject with a lot of content. Using SQ3R, brain storming and note taking to make notes that show an understanding of the work and bring to class to show as examples. Also encourage learners to watch clips on apps and try one of them. additional link study apps study apps

18 Grd 10: Study Skills Term 2 Lesson 2

19 Quick recap what we have learnt so far...
STUDY SKILLS: listening, reading, comprehension as well as memory, organisation and time management STUDY METHODS: note-taking, mind-mapping as well as select concepts and content, assignments and essay construction and doing comparisons. What is the difference between a study skill and study method? Study skills are the abilities like reading and listening needed to study. Study Methods are the techniques we use to remember the work we study.

20 Its all very well studying hard but what happens if you just cant remember?

21 How to improve your concentration and memory
How to improve your concentration and memory? Watch this clip and complete the challenge in Activity 2B. 15min for watching and completing challenge.

22 Remember the apps you explored for homework? Digital vs Manuel
Divide the class into some groups that agree digital is better and others that disagree. Allow these groups 5min to discuss the pros and cons and then give feedback to the class.

23 Why is it important to plan your time during the week?
Ask the class and lead them towards seeing that with proper planning there is less stress to get things finished. There is also less chance that you will forget something important. Indicate for the next activity we will use manuel planning but they are welcome to further explore digital diary apps when doing their homework.

24 Monthly Plan Assessment plan
Time Management What you will need to manage your time… Monthly Plan Assessment plan Apply this activity to the case study of Sammy. Complete Activity 3 while working through this case study.

25 Meet Sammy... Sammy is presently in Grade 10. She has English Home language , Xhosa 1st Additional , Math, Science, Drama, Bussiness and LO as subjects this year. Sammy is feeling incredibly overwhelmed by all the work for exams. Would you help her sort out her study time? Use the Exam time table (next slide) to help Sammy block out her study times for the month on the calender. Chat about it as a group. How can you be sure you have left enough time to study per subject? 5min includes feedback.- Activibty 3 (teachers resource: ) Once they have done that they will work on the sheet marked Activity 5. Activity 4 is for homework.

Make sure you have a copy of the exam time table or assessment plan for this activity. Follow the steps in Activity 3 with your class. The activity will take place in TWO parts. The first will be done in class and the 2nd is for homework. 20min Each person will recieve a calender print out- (teacher to choose the month before exams starts.) They will then use their asessment plan to block out the exams on the days that they will be written. Encourage each exam to be highlighted or coloured in differently.

27 Sammys weekly breakdown...
DAY TIME ACTIVITY Monday to Friday 7:45-14:45 School and lunch 14:45- 16:00 Netbal (Only Mmonday, Wed & Thursdays) 16:00- 16:30 Get home and do chores 16:30-17:30 Homework 17:30- 18:30 Supper and bath 18:30- 18:55 Session 1 18:55 – 19:00 Break 19:25- 19: 50 Session 2 19:50 – 19:55 20:00- 20:25 Session 3 20:25 – 21:30 Relax before bedtime Use Activity 5 to help Sammy plan her study time for 2 weeks before exams start. Work in your groups. 10-15min.

28 What have you discovered about planning time for Sammy to study before Exams starts? Is TWO Weeks enough time for her to study before exams? Give a few short minutes to discuss in groups and then allow one or TWO groups to give feedback on these 2 questions. 20- 25min for entire Meet Sammy activity. Remind Act 4 is for homework. WATCH clip: Using you Diary to organise your life for studying better. Watch from 3:29 – 5:17

29 Sammy has felt your advice very helpful and asked if you could assist with one more problem. Sammy struggles to construct and write an essay. Discuss in your groups some tips for her. 5min

30 Did you group have the following suggestions?
Understand the question- underline the key words in the question and make sure you understand what you have been asked to do. Plan your essay- use a brainstorm and plan your different paragraphs to flow logically. Break your essay down into an introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction, introducing the argument and should be a seperate paragraph. The body provides evidence towards your argument. Start each new idea in a new paragraph. And the conclusion brings the closing thoughts of your argument together. Check your mark allocation so you know how much time you should spend on writing the essay. If there is time left of the lesson, allow learners to give feedback on other helpful suggestions that worked for them.

31 Grd 10: Study Skills Term 2 Lesson 3

32 Take out your exam planning that you did for homework.
In your groups, compare the different ways in which each one planned for their exams. Also look at the diary breakdown. Who has the most realistic planning in the group? Who in the group is the busiest person with limited time to study? 5min to chat in groups and reflect..

33 How are you assessed at school?
School Based assessment

34 What examples can you give of assessment that you have experienced?
Assessment is the term given to collecting evidence that helps you see how you are performing in your subjects and how much of the content you understand and can apply in different situations. What examples can you give of assessment that you have experienced? Ask learners to put up their hands and give you some examples.

35 What is the difference between Formal and informal Assessment?
Complete the Worksheet called Activity 6 and see if you can organise the types of assessments into TWO different groups- FORMAL and INFORMAL ASSESMENTS Allow time for learners to do Activity 6 in their notebooks on their own. 5min

36 Check your answers.. FORMAL ASSESSMENT INFORMAL ASSESSMENT
case study task Class quiz project role plays exam first aid certificate orals Driver’s license practical task study skills course English exam essays class test assignments group class work homework 10min for entire activity

37 What is an External Assessment?
These are the exams set extenally by the department of education or the National Department.

38 You have learnt HOW to study. WHEN to study. WHAT assessements are
You have learnt HOW to study.. WHEN to study.... WHAT assessements are... NOW lets look at writing the actual exam. The following activity could be a bit challenging. Read to the learners to see how much they understand. You might need to work through the questions with them.

39 Were going to look at some questions in a past GRD 10 June exam paper to understand WHAT is required of you when answering the question. Start Activity 7 Allow time for learners to first try do the activity on their own then work through the answers. Again if its too challenging for them rather work through with the learners.

40 Start by HIGHLIGHTING the instruction VERB in each question below
5.1.1 Study the above cartoons. Name TWO industries that have seen the most growth in terms of new job titles over the last 5 years? (2) 5.1.2 Discuss why these industries might have experienced such large growth. Give at least ONE reason for each industry (2X2=4) 5.1.3 As a worker, why is it important to follow trends regarding which jobs are in demand? (2) Critically discuss if there are any drawbacks to choosing a job that is very popular or ‘trendy’ at a particular point in time. (2) 5.1.5 If you had to choose one of the jobs pictured above, which would you choose and why? Provide TWO reasons based on the information included about each job (2) Classify each of the above jobs into a career field. (4)

41 Then work out what that verb is actually telling you to do in each question. Make notes below:
5.1.1 NAME- This could be a one word answer. It does not need to be explained. 5.1.2 DISCUSS- This means to show both sides of an argument. GIVE- provide inforamtion from memory. 5.1.3 WHY- Explain the reason behind the statement above. 5.1.4 CRITICALLY DISCUSS- You give aspects of the argument and then determine whether you agree or not. 5.1.5 WHICH- Make a choice. WHY- Give a reason for your choice. 5.1.6 CLASSIFY- To put into a specific category or grouping. Ask learners to give feedback on what they have written- Give time to wrote these defenitions into their notes. 15min

42 Lets see if you can work our exactly what the instructions are asking of you. Match the column of the VERB with the question: Allow learners to work in groups of 2. You could make it fun and encourage a bit of competition. Lets see which group has the most answers correct.

43 Write the correct verb with a sample question.
DESCRIPTION SOLVE What changes would you recommend? ANALYSE How was this similar to…? DEBATE Do you know another instance? LIST Which events could have happened? COMPARE How many? SOLVE- Do you know another instance? ANALYSE- Which events could have happened? DEBATE- What changes would you recommend? LIST- How many? COMPARE- How was this similar to…? Spend about 5min discussing… Allow time for learners to write the correct answers into their books.

44 Concluding thoughts... Your brain is like a sponge and has the ability to absorb a certain amount of information and then it needs a break. In the last few lessons you’ve learnt about study methods, time management and different kinds of assessments. You’ve learnt how to answer questions in an exam by understanding the VERBS used in questions.

45 Lastly... Always keep challenging yourself by growing your CRITICAL THINKING. Lets see how you do solving these riddles and dingbats. Work together with your partner and see how many you can solve. Leave between 15 and 20min for this last activity. Allow them to write answers on a sheet of paper. Maybe have a prize for the winning team at the end. Watch your time to leave a few minutes giving the correct answers.
