Prehistory Can be simply defined as the time before writing Dates for prehistory can vary: 2 Million (MYA) – 3500 BC The Eras of Prehistory: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic

3 Paleolithic Era – OLD STONE AGE
The Old Stone Age 2 MYA – 50, 000 BC (Dates are relative) Characteristics of era: Existence of Hominids – human like creatures Evidence of first Modern Human Beings (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) circa 100,000 BC Hunting / Gathering / Nomadic Inventions: Technology Limited (tools made of wood, bone & stone), Culture, Possible early language, controlled fire, evidence of family life

6 Mesolithic Era – Middle Stone Age
The Middle Stone Age 50,000 – 15,000 BC (Dates are relative) Characteristics of era: Evidence of the spread of Modern Human Beings out of Africa, Early Domestication or Cultivation, Semi-Nomadic Ice / Land Bridges: Beringia & Doggerland Physical adaptations to the ICE AGE i.e. physical environment, geography and climate coupled with moderations of direct sunlight and year round wearing of clothing affects physical appearances of our ancestors Inventions: Technology Improving, Bow & Arrow, further language development, evidence of musical instruments, cave art (Lascaux), Slash and Burn agriculture, evidence of clan and tribal groups

The New Stone Age: Agricultural Revolution 15,000 BC – 3500 BC (Dates are relative) Characteristics of era: Domesticate, Cultivate, Settled Evidence of sophisticated language, technology and village life (settlements) Jericho, Skara Brae, Catal Huyuk, Mallaha Surpluses of food leads to development of storage bins, bread, beer and pottery. Extra time increases and enhances technological advances in all areas particularly in the FERTILE CRESCENT Immergence of Archaeo-astronomical Monumental Structures: STONEHENGE
