2 Diet in the Wild Peafowl eat a lot of different foods in the wild including: Grass Berries Figs Small reptiles and mammals

3 Diet in Captivity Peafowl eat a lot of different foods in captivity including: Trout chow Dog food and rabbit pellets Oats Shelled and cracked corn Greens mixture Scratch

4 Habitat Peafowl are native to India.
Peafowl live in Sri Lanka, southeast Asia, and India. Peafowl live in the forest undergrowth by rivers and streams.

5 Structural Characteristics
The male and female peafowl have a train but the male has a longer train then the female. Both use the train to attract a mate and to defend by making themselves look bigger.

6 Structural Characteristics
Both male and female have a crown of bare shafted feathers. The female’s neck and upper breast is green, the male’s is blue.

7 Life Cycle During courtship, the male spreads his train, struts and whirls to face the female. The female makes a nest in thick, dark bushes. The female lays 4-8 cream colored eggs.

8 Life Cycle Incubation takes 27-30 days.
Only the female tends to the young. The peafowl’s life span is about 20 years.

9 Behavioral Characteristics
Peafowl are non-migratory birds which means they don’t go to warmer places for winter. The call of the peafowl sounds like “kee-ow.” It’s common for peafowl to roost at night.

10 Cool Stuff The peafowl’s Latin name is “pavo cristatus.”
The peafowl’s status is common.

11 Cool Stuff The males are peacock, females are peahen, babies are peachick, describing no in particular one is a peafowl. Peafowl are commonly given free rein in zoos.
