2 INSTRUCTIONS SCIENCE 8 Cells and Systems Unit Project
Choose one disorder, disease or medical condition that could happen in one of the body systems: (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory, skeletal, muscular or nervous). You can present the information in format of choice: poster, google slides Describe the disorder or disease: Slide 1:Title of disease/disorder /1 Slide 2: What is it? /3 How is it caused? /2 Picture of disease/disorder /3 Slide 3: What are the symptoms? /2 What is the treatment? /2 Can it affect everyone? /2

3 Slide 4: Which system does it affect? /1 Which organs in the system does it affect? /1 Does it affect more than just the system you chose (eg: lung cancer affects the respiratory system but can also affect the circulatory system) /2 Slide 5 Describe the function of the affected body system (from slide 4) /3 List the organs involved with this system /2 Picture of the body system /2 Slide 6: Sources /2 Creativity of slides /2 OUT OF 30

4 What is it? How is it caused?
Down syndrome is a medical disability that happens when a baby is born with an extra chromosome (instead of a usual total of 46 chromosome there is 47). Down syndrome or DS is more of a risk to women when they are pregnant over the age of 35, the odds raise from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 100 from age 30 to 35. Although, there is no way to totally prevent the disability. Down syndrome is a disease in which there are impairments in the cognitive ability and a physical growth limit that ranges from mild to moderate developmental disabilities.

5 What are the symptoms? What’s the treatment?
Physical: Some symptoms of down syndrome are an decrease in muscle tone, excess skin and a shorter neck, all facial appearances are smaller and more flat, eyes slanted upwards and a skinfold on the upper eyelid, white colored spots on the eye also known as Brushfield Spots, short and wide hands with stubby fingers, one deep crease on the middle of the hand, and a deep groove between the big toe and second toe. Unfortunately there is no cure for this disease Intellectual/Development: Some of the mental symptoms of down syndrome are a shortened attention span, impulsive behavior, poor judgement. Slower learning, and delayed speech and language development. Down syndrome can affect anyone because it is something you are born with and usually happens by chance.

6 What System Does It Affect?
Organ system: Down syndrome can affect all of the organ systems. Down syndrome can give you heart defects, respiratory problems, and even hearing problems. It also gives you an increased chance of Alzheimer's disease(decrease over time in memory and thinking skills), epilepsy(temporary confusion, uncontrollable movement of limbs, loss of consciousness, and psychic symptoms such as deja vu fear and anxiety), childhood leukemia(severe infections,fatigue/weakness,easy bleeding/bruising,nosebleeds, and fever/chills, and red spots on skin), and thyroid conditions(This affects the thyroid gland over functioning or under functioning it. The thyroid gland is responsible for making thyroid hormones which maintain your body's metabolism.) Specific Organs: Down Syndrome affects the Heart, the Gut, Ears, Eyes, Thyroid Gland, Brain, Spine, and other Miscellaneous organs.

7 Nervous System Function: The nervous system is responsible for the control of the other organ systems in the body. This system is also what is responsible for making different organ systems work together. Organs: Brain, Spinal cord, Sensory Organs, and all the nerves that connect all of these organs with the rest of the body.

8 Cardiovascular System
Function: This system has three different functions: the first is transporting Nutrients, the second is transporting Oxygen throughout the body, and the last is to transport hormones to the cells in your body to get rid of metabolic waste such as carbon dioxide. Organs: Heart, blood vessels, and blood.

9 Respiratory System Function: Provide oxygen to the body's cells and remove carbon dioxide. Organs: This system has three important parts: The Airway, Lungs, and muscles used for respiration.
