6 2018 Survey Results & Treatment
From PLM Lake & Land Management Corp: In 2018, 5 acres of EWM were targeted for control. We also treated 1 acre for algae and treated Purple Loosestrife. In 2017, 4 acres of EWM was treated, acres, 2015 – 7.2 acres.

7 2017 Survey Results & Treatment
From PLM Lake & Land Management Corp: EWM will vary annually, however, the treatments have been successful in limiting expansion and the program has been very successful. We will continue to  look for newly introduced exotic plants.

8 2017 Survey Results & Treatment
From PLM Lake & Land Management Corp: In regards to algae control, Bear Lake is a state designated Trout Lake. Therefore, many forms of algae control (algaecides, copper sulfate) are prohibited. We do have some limited options if and when we have an algae issue, however, many times algae will dissipate out naturally.

9 2018 CLMP Lake Quality Readings
With an average TSI score of 29 based on 2017 Secchi transparency, chlorophyll-a, and summer total phosphorus data, this lake is rated as an oligotrophic lake. The low level of nutrients in the lake results in dissolved oxygen being available throughout the water column for the entire summer. Long term monitoring shows slight downward slopes on the parameters, indicating a very slow movement toward lower nutrient levels in the lake. Report is available for distribution. thank you to sue & mike boss Oligotrophic: Generally deep and clear lakes with little aquatic plant or algae growth. These lakes maintain sufficient dissolved oxygen in the cool, deep-bottom waters during late summer to support cold water fish, such as trout and whitefish. Average TSI 2018 Bear Lake 29 30 All CLMP Lakes 41 40 43

10 Point-of-Sale Septic Systems Test
Required for all Kalkaska County home sales Septic tank pumping & inspection Must be replaced if it indicates failure Kalkaska Board of Commissioners are likely to rescind due to lack of effectiveness Considering a replacement based on possible task force study

11 New Boating Law Effective 2019
New requirements to stop the introduction and spread of Aquatic Invasive Species! Follow these steps: A person shall NOT... Launch or transport watercraft or trailers unless they are free of aquatic organisms, including plants. Transport a watercraft without removing all drain plugs and draining all water from bilges, ballast tanks, and live wells. Release unused bait into the water. Violation of the law is a state civil infraction. Violators may be subject to fines.

12 MSU Mobile Boat Wash Coming to Bear Lake Friday, June 28, 8 - 5 pm
Raise awareness CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS! CLEAN BOATS, CLEAN WATERS! marge

13 Algae – The Causes All fertilizers contain nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. Storm water run-off flows from your lawn into a ditch, down the road or directly into the lake. Stormwater also percolates down into the groundwater and enters the lake through underground springs.

14 Algae – The Cures Step 1. Mow your fall leaves back into your lawn. Make extra passes if necessary. Step 2. Top dress with ¼”- ½” compost. Step 3. Feed the soil not the grass. Grass clippings are free fertilizer. Step 4. Once a week, water deeply. Step 5. Don’t use a lawn service that uses chemical fertilizers.
