Action of Enzymes How Enzymes Work
Section 2-4 Action of Enzymes How Enzymes Work

Enzymes Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions in the body. Ex: Speeds up digestion, affect the storage and release of energy

How Enzymes Work 1. Act on a specific substrate, such as sucrose.

How Enzymes Work 2. Each substrate fits into an area called the active site. Lock-and-key mechanism The enzyme changes shape a little to fit with the substrate. The enzyme-substrate complex puts stress on the substrate.

How Enzymes Work 3. The products are released

How Enzymes Work 4. After the reaction, the enzyme released is in its original shape and can go on to carry out the same reaction again and again. In doing so, enzymes increase the speed at which chemical reactions occur without being altered themselves.
