2 Class Discussion Do you think we would see a chapter like this in a Health book in, say, the… 1950’s? 1970’s? 1990’s? Why do we now have a chapter dedicated to violence and abuse? “Bad boys, bad boys…what cha gonna do?”

3 Continued Discussion Why does this happen in our society?
Media!! Cluttered minds. Brainwashed. Violent video games / movies Influences begin at an early age. Bad parenting- may not know otherwise. Bullying at school Anger management problems / Emotions Others?

4 Factors That Lead to Conflicts
Feeling Threatened- stress induced Unmanaged Anger- one’s environment Lack of Respect Bullying- more on this later Gangs- need for belonging- nonexistent elsewhere- reds, blues, bandanas, etc.- leads to conflict.

5 Mr. Hughes’ 4 Tips to Surviving High School
1. DON’T SHOW OFF- Nobody really cares! 2. AVOID DRAMA- Don’t go there! 3. STAY FOCUSED- Put those blinders on! 4. COMMUNICATE WITH STAFF- Be proactive with problems. Nice mug… huh?

Be Tolerant of Others If you see it, report it- anonymously Don’t be worried about telling someone if it happens to you Be assertive, not aggressive Avoid bully types Respect yourself Beat them with kindness and a passive response- Why?

Recognize the signs Calm things down Leave the situation Offer alternatives Which are you best with?

9 Conflict Resolution Skill
What is a “negotiation”? … “a bargain or compromise for a peaceful solution to a conflict.” Voice control- TACT ;) Don’t run your mouth!! Respect other opinions and practice tolerance Allow others to speak Don’t assume (you know what this does?) Focus on the real issue or issues
