3 How did the Industrial Revolution and Western expansion lead to increased sectionalism in the United States during the first half of the 19th century? Industrial Revolution led to greater sectionalism because it led to the invention of the cotton gin. This made the South continue to rely more on slavery and set it apart from the North who did not use slavery. The Industrial Revolution made the North and the South more different from each other. The advances in technology made the North focus on manufacturing and the South on agriculture. Western expansion led to greater sectionalism because it upset the balance between slave states and free states. Every time there was a new territory or state there would always be an argument whether it should be free or slave.
