1 Fort Drum Connector Project Route 11 Bridge Aesthetic Options

2 Route 11 Bridge The Fort Drum Connector Project will construct a new 4 lane highway from I81 to US Route 11 and the Fort Drum main gate. A major component of the project will include a single point urban intersection (SPUI) that consists of a long span steel girder bridge with extended concrete retaining walls that carry traffic over US Route 11 to the Fort Drum Main Gate. These walls offer an opportunity for an aesthetic treatment which will be discussed in the presentation that follows.

3 Theme of Aesthetic Options As you will see in the following slides, the department has developed various combinations of texture, layout and content that focus on Jefferson County and Fort Drum. We felt this theme was fitting as the Fort Drum connector project will serve as a direct link between Fort Drum and other communities and destination points within Jefferson County. The new highway will offer a direct route from Fort Drum and its neighboring communities to I81 and other vital destination points such as the City of Watertown, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Displayed within the remainder of the presentation, the walls on each side of the bridge will provide an aesthetic treatment focusing on either Fort Drum or Jefferson County. The Fort Drum theme will be positioned on the east side of the bridge, and Jefferson County will be placed on the west side.

4 Presentation The presentation will now walk you through the thought process of developing the Aesthetic Treatments. The composition of the Aesthetic Treatments were broken down into various categories including texture, focal point, visual theme and complimentary elements. The slideshow will show various alternatives of each category and will then provide examples of alternative combinations. At the end of the presentation we have provided six NYSDOT design options. While these are our preferred alternatives we are looking for your ideas as well. We would like to know what you think about the presented options, layouts and theme, as well as any other comments or ideas that you may have.
