1 Math with MacGuyver!

2 Data Sheet Inputs As each team conducts its testing, record:
The distance the cup is lifted The radius of the windmill’s swept area The number of nuts lifted The time it takes to lift Now you can calculate: The total mass The swept area 1 nut = 6.8 g

3 Calculations Energy The work done to produce power over a period of time Units: Joule = kg m2 s2 = N m 1 joule is the amount of energy required to move 1 kilogram 1 meter at a rate of 1 m/s2 Energy = mass (kg) x acceleration of gravity (m/s2) x height (m)

4 Calculations Power The rate at which work is performed, or the rate at which energy is produced or consumed Units: Watt = J s 1 Watt is the power required to do 1 joule of work for 1 second Power = energy (J) time (s)

5 Calculations Power in the wind P (W) = ½ ρ A V3
ρ = air density = 0.95 kg/m3 at 7000 ft A = swept area V = wind velocity of the fan

6 Calculations Windmill Efficiency
A comparison between the theoretical power available in the wind and the actual power output of the windmill Efficiency (%) =( Power output of the windmill (W) Power in the wind (W) ) 100%

7 Evaluation Which team’s windmill was most efficient? Losses?
Due to high mass? Short time? Why did their windmill work well? Losses?
