For the duration of Primary 5, the class will take part in various learning experiences through four contexts: Discrete Subject Areas, Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL), Ethos and Life of the School and Planned Opportunities for Personal Development. Discrete Subject Areas Generally, we learn these subjects on their own. The knowledge and skills we learn can be transferred and applied in other areas. Maths P5 will work on their numeracy skills through SEAL and Numicon strategies within the classroom. We will also be using an online resource called Bigmaths to plan lesson and monitor any progression in their learning. This term P5 will also be learning about time and fractions. We will be revising the analogue and digital clock, learning to calculate durations and how to interpret and create timetables. We will be revising our previous fraction knowledge and learning how to solve problems using this knowledge. Literacy Primary 5 will have opportunity for reading, writing, listening and speaking. To increase their reading knowledge we have introduced ‘The Thinking Reader’ strategies. This allows the children to use multiple reading skills throughout one piece of work. Each week we a have a creative writing task, reinforcing the key grammar skills at Level 2. We also have weekly story time, class presentations and use media to express opinions on a variety of themes. We will use I pads once a week to design, research and create new text. Throughout the term will take advantage of our IDL learning topics as stimulus to produce various pieces of writing and continue to strengthen our VCOP skills. Languages Primary 5 will continue to increase their knowledge of Spanish this term as we try to embed the language into our classroom. Science/Social Studies Over this term we will be learning about solids, liquids and gases. We will understand the states of matter and the processes involved in the water cycle. We will investigate and make predictions when making solutions. We will also investigate the water samples and discuss the importance of water. We will also be learning about Living on Earth. We will be learning about ecosystems, food chains and webs. We will also look at where our food comes from and what impact humans have on our Environment. We will have outdoor learning activities too enhance learning and awareness of our natural world. Health and Wellbeing Throughout the term we will talking about what it means to be a rights respecting class. We will understand our rights and responsibilities. We will also be working on building resilience and building confidence to explore our emotions. We will introduce a “graffiti wall” to highlight how we are feeling each day. We will be exploring where our food comes from and how we can stay healthy cooking and eating local produce. Within the classroom we will use our knowledge of water to create art displays and song. We will explore a new artist every month, we will explore art techniques, including using colour to express emotion and using shade in pictures. Our Living on Earth will give us lot of great learning to create dynamic and interesting works of art. Religious Education During term 1 we will be discussing becoming a member of the Christian family, caring for the world and others and restoring our faith. We have a weekly children's liturgy, using resource from the Scottish Catholic Observer. We will also prepare the liturgy for our class assembly in October.

2 Interdisciplinary Learning
Throughout the school our IDL topics allow the children to learn a range of subjects relating to one particular theme in a relevant, enjoyable and challenging manner. Over our first term P5’s IDL topics will be Solids, Liquid and gases and Living on Earth. The topics allow the children to use their learning in many different areas of their learning. Ethos and Life in School Our children are being encouraged to contribute to the life and work of the school and, from the earliest stages, to exercise their responsibilities as members of a community. This includes opportunities to participate responsibly in decision-making, to contribute as leaders and role models. Through our whole school assemblies, the children are given the opportunity to share their classwork with the whole school. Planned Opportunities for Personal Development As a school and class we enjoy hearing all of our children’s achievements either within school or out with school. It is fantastic to see and hear the children in P5 sharing their achievements whether they are academic or sport. We have opportunities at the end of the week during circle time to share this with the class and the opportunity to share within assembly and school.
