1 Separation and Capture of CO2 using membrane technology
University of Zaragoza Background Atmospheric CO2 concentration has increased from 280 to 370 ppm over the last 200 years, this is due to use of fossil fuels (petrol, coal, natural gas). By 2100 carbon cycle models predict concentration of 540 to 970 ppm. Problem This increase of atmospheric CO2 concentrations is the main cause of greenhouse effect. CO2 reduction would be necessary CO2 capture technologies must be developed Kyoto Protocol OLD WAY NEW WAY WITH MEMBRANES Post-combustion separation absorb & re-radiate heat CO2 The Greenhouse Effect N2+CO2 Increasing greenhouse gases Combustion CO2 H2 flux enrichment Synthesis Gas H2+CO2 H2 Pre-separation H2 Membrane Reforming CH4 + CO2 CH4+H2O H2+CO2 CO2 H2 H2O N2 CO2 H2O N2 CO2 geologic storage Coal CO2 geologic storage Natural Gas CH4 + CO2 Green Power Petrol + Coal H2 Petrol Natural Gas Power NO CO2 EMISSIONS Geologic Storage Facts Satisfactory test with different types of zeolitic membranes Membrane reactors tested in fuel reforming Need to improve membranes (further research) in order to future industrial introduction Membrane separation and geologic storage  reduction emissions of greenhouse gases By I. Pellejero; M. Menendez
