1 An Introduction to the Australian Curriculum for Parents
Monday 4th March

2 Our session today will -outline the recommended time provisions for the Australian Curriculum -explain the way the Australian Curriculum is structured -provide some links for more information

3 The Department of Education is working towards full implementation of the Australian Curriculum by the end of 2020 - Planning, Assessing and Reporting against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.

5 How is the Australian Curriculum structured?
The three-dimensional design of the Prep– Year 10 Australian Curriculum recognises the importance of disciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding alongside general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. The Australian Curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.

6 How is the Australian Curriculum structured? Eight Leaning Areas
English Maths Science HASS Technologies Health and physical Education Languages The Arts

7 The Learning Areas are either taught, assessed and reported on as a Year Level or Band
Year Level Learning Areas are linked to a Year Level -English -Maths -Science -HASS Your child will work towards a Year Level Achievement Standard each year. Banded Learning Areas are linked to a group of year levels Technologies Health and physical Education Languages The Arts Your child will work towards an achievement standard across a band of years.

Seven General Capabilities -Literacy -Numeracy -ICT Capabilities -Critical and Creative Thinking -Personal and Social capability -Intercultural understanding -Ethical understanding The general capabilities play a significant role in the Australian Curriculum in equipping young Australians to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century. In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school. addressed through the content of the learning areas

9 How is the Australian Curriculum structured?
Three Cross Curriculum Priorities Sustainability Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures priorities that give students the tools and language to engage with and better understand their world at a range of levels. provide national, regional and global dimensions which will enrich the curriculum through development of considered and focused content that fits naturally within learning areas. addressed through learning areas and do not constitute curriculum on their own, as they do not exist outside of learning areas.

Year Level Description Achievement standard Content Descriptions Presented as a developmental sequence of learning from Prep - Year 10 Year Level Description What are we required to teach in each year level within this learning/subject area? achievement standards describe the depth of understanding and the sophistication of knowledge and skill expected of students at the end of each year level or band of years.
