1 Factors, Multiples, Primes, and Composites Model & Guided Practice
By Teachers Unleashed

2 Factors Factors are numbers that can be multiplied together to achieve a product. These are the numbers that can be multiplied to get 21 Examples: Factors of 21 are: 3, 7, 21, and 1 Written in number order: 1, 3, 7, 21 Factors of 30 are: 3, 10, 5, 6, 15, 2, 30, 1 Written in number order: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30 Factors of 12 are: 3, 4, 6, 2, 12, 1 Written in number order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12

3 You Try!!! What are the factors of 20? 4, 5, 10, 2, 20, 1
In order: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20 What are the factors of 32? 8, 4, 16, 2, 32, 1 In order: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 What are the factors of 18? 6, 3, 9, 2, 18, 1 In order: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18 CHALLENGE: What are the factors of 72? 9, 8, 36, 2, 24, 3, 18, 4, 12, 6, 72, 1 In order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 72

4 All you need to do is skip count by the number to get its multiples
A multiple of a number is the product of that number and any whole number All you need to do is skip count by the number to get its multiples Examples: Multiples of 2 are: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 Multiples of 5 are: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 Multiples of 7 are: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35

5 You Try!!! What are the multiples of 3? 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24
6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 What are the multiples of 9? 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63 CHALLENGE: What are the multiples of 12? 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96

6 Prime Numbers Prime numbers are whole numbers with exactly two factors- the number itself and 1 Examples: 2 is a prime number because the only two numbers you can multiply to get 2 are: 2 and 1 7 is a prime number because the only two numbers you can multiply to get 7 are: 7 and 1

7 You Try!!! No, because its factors are 2, 6, 3, 4, 12, and 1
Is 12 a prime number? Yes, because its factors are only 11 and 1 Is 11 a prime number? Yes, because its factors are only 23 and 1 Is 23 a prime number? No, because its factors are 2, 7, 14, and 1 Is 14 a prime number?

8 Composite Composite numbers are like opposites of prime numbers. They are whole numbers with more than two factors. Examples: 8 is a composite number because it has more than two factors: 2, 4, 8, and 1 10 is a composite number because it has more than two factors: 2, 5, 10, and 1 16 is a composite number because it has more than two factors: 8, 2, 4, 16, and 1

9 You Try!!! Yes, because it has more than two factors: 9, 2, 6, 3, 18, and 1 Is 18 a composite number? Is 13 a composite number? No, because it has only two factors: 13 and 1 Yes, because it has more than two factors: 4, 5, 10, 2, 20, and 1 Is 20 a composite number? Is 3 a composite number? No, because it has only two factors: 3 and 1

10 Your turn- on your own! 1, 2, _, 4, 6, _, 12, 16,__, 48
Do all 3 and the stumper! 1) Fill in the missing factors of 48. 1, 2, _, 4, 6, _, 12, 16,__, 48 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16,24, 48 2) What are the multiples of 8? (you can stop at 72) 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64 3) Can you find all 8 prime numbers smaller than 20? 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 Stumper: If you have a whole number, and it is greater than 2, and it is an even number, is it prime or composite? Why? It must be composite. If it is an even number, then 2 must be a factor.
