2 What is a Bureaucracy A bureaucracy is a large, complex structure that handles everyday business. Three features of a bureaucracy. 1. There is a chain of command from bottom to top. 2. Job specification 3. Formalized rules.

3 What is Bureaucracy A chain of command set ways for decisions to be made. Job specification promotes efficiency.

4 Major Elements The President is at the top of the Federal Government.
The departments in the government are set for by the Constitution. The Executive branch is divided into three areas: the Executive Office, the Cabinet departments, and independent agencies.

5 Name Game Departments are agencies of Cabinet rank.
Agency and administration are terms used for units with near Cabinet power. Commission is used for business activities. Corporation and authority are given to business like units. There is no uniform use of names.

6 Staff and Line Agencies
Staff agencies serve in a support capacity. Line agencies actually perform the tasks for which the organization exists. EPA.
