1 DO NOW Pick up handout/notes.
Density Block lab from yesterday is due Thursday.

2 Physical and Chemical Aspects
Remember to write everything that is in red for your notes. MATTER Physical and Chemical Aspects

3 Anything that has mass and takes up space.
MATTER What is matter? It is NOT heat, ideas, electricity, light, energy, magnetism Anything that has mass and takes up space.

4 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES The characteristics of a substance that CAN be observed without altering the identity of the substance. All of these things below can be done without changing what the substance is. Examples: color texture mass volume density temperature weight hardness phase length

5 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES An EXTENSIVE PROPERTY is a property that changes when the size of the sample changes. Examples are mass, volume, and length. An INTENSIVE PROPERTY is a property that doesn't change when you take away some of the sample. Examples are temperature, color, hardness, melting point, boiling point, pressure, molecular mass, and density. Because intensive properties are sometimes characteristic of a particular material, they can be helpful as clues in identifying unknown substances.

6 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES IN IN IN IN IN IN EX EX EX EX
Now go back and label the physical properties as extensive or intensive. color texture mass volume density temperature weight hardness phase length IN IN EX EX IN IN EX IN IN EX

7 DENSITY Intensive physical property The amount of mass per unit volume
The denser the object, the more packed together the molecules/atoms are per a given volume. Density = Mass / Volume Units are g/mL or g/cm3

8 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES The characteristics of a substance that CANNOT be observed without altering the identity of the substance Examples: flammability oxidation (rusting, tarnishing)

9 YESTERDAY’S VIDEO Answer Question #2 based on what you saw yesterday.

10 TO DO NOW Backside of notes due tomorrow. Remember there is an Earth Science book under your desk (questions #5). Work on your Density Block lab (due Thursday).
