Life. Marie Skłodowska was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a family of teachers who believed strongly in education. She moved to Paris to continue her studies and there met Pierre Curie, who became both her husband and colleague in the field of radioactivity. The couple later shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics.

In 1898 they discovered two new elements - polonium and radium. Polonium was named after Marie's homeland, Poland. Radium got its name from the Latin word for ray. In 1906 Pierre Curie died when he was run over by a horse-drawn carriage.

Marie Curie grew up in Warsaw, Poland where she was born on November 7, Her birth name was Maria Sklodowska, but her family called her Manya. Her parents were both teachers.
