1 Robert Browning published ‘My Last Duchess’ in 1842 in a book of poems entitled, Dramatic Lyrics. He was experimenting with style and form and attempting to create a new kind of poetry for the Victorian age. The Romantics has had their day and the public were looking for a poetic revolution. At the time, Penny Dreadfuls were popular reading. These were sometimes Gothic horror stories, so Browning picked up on these themes and wrote poems with psychological realism and aggressive language. The poem is based on real life historical events. Alfonso II of Modena and Ferrara ( ) married Lucrezia de Doctors and she died four years later in mysterious circumstances. The Duke later went on to marry the niece of the Count of Tyrol. It is suggested that in the poem, the narrator is in fact meeting with the Count, or an emissary, to try and persuade him to allow him to marry his niece.
